When a disc is put into the tray you can hear the it spin up momentarily then it stops, it does this three or four times before displaying the 'open tray' message on screen. I just want to know if it is likely to be the laser that is causing the problem, or is it something else?

N.B. The drive will read discs around half the time with no problems.

assuming the discs are in good condition, it could be a dirty laser, for starters take the game out, close the tray wait about five seconds and reset the xbox and see cause that re calibrates the laser and If that doesnt work you might have to get into the drive and clean the laser

Appreciate the advice.
I'm beginning to wonder if the worm motor could be the problem, would there be any giveaways if this was the problem?
