LGA 1155 is the socket for sandy + ivy bridge processors.

I realize that, but I'm wondering if 3rd gen will work with a 2nd gen socket.

With a BIOS update, Sandy Bridge chipset boards like H61 and P67 models support Ivy Bridge CPUs, albeit without some features like PCIe 3.0 (which does not matter yet). Boards should ship with the latest update.
