so basically i have this desktop i never use, so i'm gonna dedicate 2.5 gigs of ram out of its 4 gigs of ram for a minecraft server me and my friends will play on. i know how to do that, i've got that all down pat, but what i'm wondering is: is there someway i can make the 499 gigabytes left on my hard drive usable from my laptop as external storage? i use my laptop for everything, gaming, editing, recording video and audio, browsing the web, etc. so this would be really useful to me if i could somehow pull this off.

is there anyway i can do this?
my laptop is windows 8 and my desktop is windows 7.

Are you looking to make it into just storage for you laptop?
Or are you thinking along the lines of Connecting it as if it's a USB.

If you're just looking for storage, then you can partition the Drive, and make a new disc directory.

aside from FTP or mapping your harddrive to the network you can do several other things to make use of the space for other devices it all depends on what you are trying to use it for.

I went through the same phase; host a minecraft server and dedicate tons of memory to it.
Lets be real, you wont need more than ~1.5 gigs, and more ram or not from my extensive experience it makes little to no difference. The only time I've noticed significantly better online performance is when I play on legitimate dedicated servers.

So technically you could do what you're trying to do.
