If you don't have dashlaunch installed, ping patch wont be enabled.
The only reason i can see, is that you don't have the correct TU.
Cod 4 current TU = TU4
Cod 6(MW2) current TU = TU8.
Google them, make sure you have all the files, not just the TU(Default_mp.xex etc...)

You cannot connect to xbox live by doing that, but if your consoles could system link by doing that it excludes the possibility of incompatibility with different TU versions.

You still need to be on the same title update on both consoles.
What game are you trying to connect to?

I meant it as more of if his consoles could connect using the one ethernet cable plugged into the back of each console then it isn't a problem with the TU's in his case. Kind of worded that badly, sorry for the confusion.

get two ethane net cables, both connected to your router plug them into your consoles.. turn jtag on and test connection this will fail as its banned from online but as long as you got connection from your router going into the jtag system link will work if not then your fuktag is fuked! cant get any simple

Not necessarily.
Can be many reasons why you cant connect via system link.
