Microsoft Office alternatives

I'm trying to find a good alternative that does most of, if not, all of the basic Microsoft Office functions. I do not wish to waste my time trying them all out and am wondering if any of you guys could recommend any? I'm thinking along the lines of either Libre Office or Google Docs. This is due to the fact that I cannot afford Microsoft Office and I do not to continue using an illegal version. I am running 10.8.3 Mountain Lion OS X.

Google Docs/Drive will do everything you need if you don't need the more in-depth features of Office. If you need to work without an internet connection, you can have Libre Office as a backup. I have the trial version of Office installed and never use it, personally.

OK. Thanks fo the advice guys. As I am travelling back and forth on trains and my home network isn't particularly reliable I'm going to check out Libre Office. Google also suggests that Libre Office is Open Office's big brother.
