I know that the files are being created because of my torrent client, Vuze. However, what exactly are these files and can I stop them from appearing in my Applications folder?

I have now figured out how to do this. My new question is, what does Universal Plug and Play actually do? The only answer I can find is like a foreign language to me.

I just answered your other thread too lol UpNp is designed so that when you plug a device into a router, the router recognizes what ports that device needs in order to communicate and opens them for it. Does that help?

Yes it does. It helps me understand what it is. However, is it necessary? I like to keep my system clean and these files are a little annoying.
