If i'm only going to get Arma II for DayZ should i still buy the full game? also...does anyone have any recommendations for me to play as i have just built a new computer?

I'm pretty sure you'd have to buy it if you want to play multiplayer on DayZ. I haven't heard of anyone succeeding doing otherwise.
If you just built a new PC, try out free to play games on Steam. APB is a great one, and you can do quite a lot without paying. Gotham City Impostors is cool too, but it takes some getting used to. You can try and torrent GTA SA and download the SA-MP (San Andreas Multiplayer) mod. If you got some cash, wait for a Steam sale and buy some bundles.

You need Arma II - Operation Arrowhead AND Arma II in order to play DayZ, you can get Arma II free from their website instead of paying for it, and play DayZ with it:

You need ArmA II and ArmA II Operation Arrowhead in order to play DayZ
You can get ArmA II Combined Operations which is a bundled package for about $25 on steam
