"There is no clear prophecy in the records of the ancient Maya. There is only one known ancient inscription, Monument 6 from the ruined site of Tortuguero (Chiapas, Mexico), that makes reference to the date of 13.0.0.0.0 4 Ajaw 3 Kankin, but the text is not very clear because the monument has been damaged. Epigraphers Sven Groenmeyer and Barbara MacLeod think it refers to a future ceremony in which a specific deity would be honored by dressing him in special clothes and perhaps carrying him in a procession. In case this doesnt quite reassure you, Id also encourage you to check out NASAs FAQ about 2012, which goes into detail explaining why some of the apocalyptic scenarios that have become attached to the year 2012 either (a) wont come to pass or (b) wont have any devastating consequences if they do. The article about fears of a magnetic polar shift, in particular, is really well done. Even if you have no fears of the world ending in 2012, you should check out the NASA FAQ anyway because it has some great scientific info in it.

Probably the most common joke Ive seen on Twitter about 2012 is If the Mayans were good at predicting the future there would still be Mayans. This goes hand in hand with the other myths of the Mayan apocalypse. There are tons of Mayans about 6 million Mayan speakers living today. Which is more than probably lived at any other single point in history.

And they are taking full advantage of 2012 to separate clueless Western tourists from their money this year. Good for them!
