I think our government is doing all they can, they keep us safe and able to sleep in our own homes at night without the fear of being bomed or raided by enemy troops. They also help prevent and research diseases/ viruses that we are exposed to Ex: CDC

Now with the case of the enviromental issues, there really is no stopping it if the earth is already doomed as you have said. Yes it is possible in the far future that we can colonize in space or even a different planet, but right now it is just a possibility/ thought.
