it allows a jtag to go online without being banned or detected...go online without one and you will be quickly console banned

Key Vaults or kvs no longer work to get a jtag online. You can not get a jtag online and may never be able to again. If a way is ever figured out, it will probably not be using new kvs.

Incorrect. It basically works as an ID for a console when going online, like a mask. When you go online with a fresh KV (or when you used to be able to) you would normally have about 7 hours at that point of going online with it the first time to be online before you would get banned. When you go online with one it's as if a flag is shot up, and you're eventually banned. So people would buy them to swap over and over so they could go online after getting banned. They normally cost about $70.
As it is right now with a JTAG or RGH Dev/Hacked nand you won't even get banned you simply just cannot connect, or attempt to connect, to Xbox Live.

Simple explination:
A keyvault is a code that every xbox has. Microsoft identifies each console by one of these codes. If a console is found running unsigned code then that console is banned and can no longer access xbox live because that keyvault is restricted from accessing xbox live.
Its like an ID badge that every xbox has.

Regarding the question "Are JTAGS worth it if you want to play online".
You do not play with jtag's online. You infect your retail xbox with your jtagged xbox through a system link game.
