You see a shirt which you want to buy but you have no money and the shirt costs 97. You borrow 50 from your mum and 50 from your dad. You buy the shirt and get 3 change. You give your mum 1, your dad 1 and you keep 1 for yourself. You now owe your mum 49 and your dad 49 pounds. 49 plus 49 = 98 plus the 1 you kept for yourself = 99. Where has the one pound gone?

As in you both gave your parents the 1, but you then minus your 1 that you kept for yourself, you don't add it on. So you actually go from 98-1, there is no missing pound because your end number becomes 97 (being the price of your shirt) with 1 to each person left including yourself
