What laptop do you have?

Most new ones come with either VGA, DVI/D or HDMI output.

For a VGA output which looks like this:
[ Register or Signin to view external links. ]

You only need the monitor and VGA cable, connect them both and all done.

For a DVI/D output which looks like this:
[ Register or Signin to view external links. ]

Depending on the monitor you may only need the monitor and dvi cable, connect them both and all done; or you may need a VGA - DVI/D converter, If this is the case please message me back.

The same applies with an HDMI output which looks like this:

You mean Extending the desktop, all you have to do is go into the control panel and choose "Extend" rather than "Mirror" and it will be two separate screens.
