You get the Skeleton Key from the last quest in the Thieves Guild. If you don't know the thieves guild is started in Riften.

It's not the last quest in the Thieves Guild, if you consider the Nightingales quests are part of the guild, which they seem to be, then there is still a remaining quest.

The quest you obtain the key is called "Blindsighted" and the last quest in the Guild is "Darkness Returns". Looking up either of them will cause you to spoil part of the quests if you have not already completed the earlier quests.

You're right, I called it the last quest by accident because I have not yet returned the Skeleton key. I plan on using it until I get my lockpicking to 100 then buying the perk where lockpicks never break.

You still need to preform the lock picking mini game though.

Not as always, in oblivion you gained it from a daedric quest. Nothing to do with the thieves guild
