Report: Call of Duty retail sales fall for third straight year

4.6
Following yesterday's NPD report, Piper Jaffray analyst Michael Olson points out that retail sales for the Call of Duty series have declined by 27 percent year-over-year.

This is not isolated news, either. The Call of Duty series has posted slumping sales in each of the past three years. While Activision's military shooters manage to sell well compared to other games the franchise is unable to reach the heights it once saw. Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare currently tops the NPD sales chart, but as Games Industry notes, this entry attracted less than half the first month sales of 2011's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.

Earlier this year, analysts at Cowen And Company pointed out that alongside declining sales, the Call of Duty games are also attracting declining pre-orders, with Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare drawing nearly 40 percent fewer retail pre-purchases than its predecessor.

Activision claims that Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare is the highest selling digital launch in console history but Olson does not believe that digital sales (which these analysts are not privy to) can entirely soften the blow of the retail sales slide. "NPD data does not include digital copies or international sales, which, if included, would lessen the year-over-year decline, but we believe this data suggests potential for Q4 revenue upside is now very low," Olson stated.

cod has been just declining. would probably benefit if they re-released cod4, waw and mw2

Look up Call of Duty Online. It's the best cod ever but Activision only delivers the opposite of what people like and made it a chinese exclusive. It's a free to play but I would definitely pay 60 dollars for it.

cod is just falling apart.

Not surprised, the last few CODs have sucked compared to the ones before them.

People want diversity, they deliver then the community complains. They're never gonna be able to please everyone.

DeluxeHazard Call of Duty is just a copy and paste game. It is obvious that the game will decline and the same will happen next year.

Treyarch's games are good. Infinity Wards and Sledgehammer's aren't, obviously

*new Infinity Ward. They made the best CODs up until they shit out MW3.

Yea that is very true, AW is not going to look good in the future. Hopefully Treyarch could finally bring back the franchise

Ever since the falling out with Infinity Ward, Infinity Ward's CoD has went south. I think that if they didn't fallout, there wouldn't be terrible CoDs. Not saying they would be better than the year before, but they would be better than they are now.

I don't care how "bad" most people think MW3 was. In my opinion, it was the last GOOD CoD. BO2 was decent, and we all know how bad Ghosts was. I would love it if they brought SpecOps back. Man, I went to town on that.

-Skittle A remake of Mw2 or a new Black Ops WITH ZOMBIES will help the series, I think AW is very good though.

Next year hopefully there will be like BO3 or something which will carry on the zombies story which I can't wait for. I just hope the next CoD has a Multiplayer which is like MW2 and a zombies mode which carries on from the Black Ops storyline.

Remakes would be awesome, but BO3 I feel will ruin the zombies storyline. They started adding in a bunch of weird elements with the BO2 DLC and I really lost interest..

I can understand due to Ghost, but AW is actually a pretty decent game. Wish more people would give it a try!
