Report: Call of Duty retail sales fall for third straight year

4.6
Following yesterday's NPD report, Piper Jaffray analyst Michael Olson points out that retail sales for the Call of Duty series have declined by 27 percent year-over-year.

This is not isolated news, either. The Call of Duty series has posted slumping sales in each of the past three years. While Activision's military shooters manage to sell well compared to other games the franchise is unable to reach the heights it once saw. Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare currently tops the NPD sales chart, but as Games Industry notes, this entry attracted less than half the first month sales of 2011's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.

Earlier this year, analysts at Cowen And Company pointed out that alongside declining sales, the Call of Duty games are also attracting declining pre-orders, with Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare drawing nearly 40 percent fewer retail pre-purchases than its predecessor.

Activision claims that Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare is the highest selling digital launch in console history but Olson does not believe that digital sales (which these analysts are not privy to) can entirely soften the blow of the retail sales slide. "NPD data does not include digital copies or international sales, which, if included, would lessen the year-over-year decline, but we believe this data suggests potential for Q4 revenue upside is now very low," Olson stated.

DualWield Hate Bal of Duty Laggy Warfare
Can't wait til that game goes.

I love it, and I use the Bal-27. Not to brag, but I'm pretty good at the game. What console does it lag for you on? I'm on PS4 and have probably experienced minimal lag once or twice through all of my 4 prestiges.

I believe its all Infinity Wards fault. Since MW3, their production has been halted. Sledgehammer (in my opinion) did wonders with AW. Its a great game so far and this was their first! Now, Treyarc on the other hand, has not lost sight of what they want CoD to be. Sure they had a bit of a hiccup with Black Ops, BUT they brought it right back with Black Ops 2. That will always be one of my favorites. Lets hope they still have it in them for their next CoD title.

MW2 , COD 4 and MW3 was were it was at, best call of duty's by a mile, ever since its been in decline and no surprise to see the drop in sales, remake one with the old graphics and old maps

ISU Probably because so many people thought Ghosts was so bad that they didnt even bother with AW!

I agree with you there, the thing is they are moving the Call Of Duty titles to far in the future, making the game very unrealistic, i feel sorry for treyarch having to wait for there next COD To be realized, hopefully there Call Of Duty is amazing like all of there titles.

I think there lots of reasons, but mostly because of how bad ghosts was, and now they are going so far into the future its putting people off

AW is almost unplayable, one of the worst..

Call of Duty should just die already, it's just not exciting anymore.

I think Ghosts has played a big part in this. People who played it probably didn't want to buy COD again.
