Xbox One disc-free console – analyst weighs in on rumor

4.8
Last night, a rumor surfaced that Microsoft was preparing to release a white 1TB Xbox One at retail, without a disc drive. Today, Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter has called the idea “dumb, dumb, dumb,” yet has also dismissed it as a complete rumor.

Speaking in an industry note, Pachter said if even true in the slightest, it would alienate not only retailer customers, but comsumers as well.

“If this rumor is true, it is one of the dumbest ideas of all time,” he said. “It would alienate GameStop and other retailers, and it would demonstrate that Microsoft can afford to release a 1TB Xbox One at $399 with essentially the same production cost as the $499 model with a 500GB HDD and a Blu-ray drive.

“That would likely cause gamers to believe that the model with a Blu-ray drive is overpriced, or would cause them to believe that Microsoft is greedy.

“I have three words for this idea—dumb, dumb, dumb.”

Pachter said he respects the people at Microsoft “immensely” and that they are “far from dumb.”

“I don’t actually believe the rumor,” he stated.

Rumors of the console were posted on both The Verge and NeoGAF last night, with the later’s source stating the console could launch as soon as October.

I wouldn't like having a Xbox One without a disc drive. I wish that the Xbox One had 1 TB of memory because I think 500 GB isn't big enough for the long run.

Sin_ModzZz its turning into a digital world and gamestop wont be dying out anytime soon.

Gamestop will be around for quite a while. This isn't going to change anything and plus this is only a rumor.

Most of all it would show that MS never really retreated from his DRM position.
Which most know its the truth

Krookodile My download speed is awful, I would like to have it but my internet would not allow it

One of the main reasons why I don't like the idea. I myself can handle large downloads but a lot of people can't.

I can't see a completely disc-less console until the next generation of consoles are out in 5-10 years.

I hope this is a rumor.

I like having the cases and stuff.

I'm for digital, but NOT only digital..

This would be good for people with extremely fast internet. But, seeing as I have slow internet, I will definitely not be getting a console, without a disc drive.

This could be a good idea. But i have really slow internet so it would take me awhile to download one game. It took me over 2 days to download GTA 5 from the marketplace. So its a good idea for people with really fast internet.

Aggie I like this, cut out the middleman. Buy them straight from Microsoft.

games might also be cheaper because no game cases, and no paying GameStop and other retailers
