Xbox One disc-free console – analyst weighs in on rumor

4.8
Last night, a rumor surfaced that Microsoft was preparing to release a white 1TB Xbox One at retail, without a disc drive. Today, Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter has called the idea “dumb, dumb, dumb,” yet has also dismissed it as a complete rumor.

Speaking in an industry note, Pachter said if even true in the slightest, it would alienate not only retailer customers, but comsumers as well.

“If this rumor is true, it is one of the dumbest ideas of all time,” he said. “It would alienate GameStop and other retailers, and it would demonstrate that Microsoft can afford to release a 1TB Xbox One at $399 with essentially the same production cost as the $499 model with a 500GB HDD and a Blu-ray drive.

“That would likely cause gamers to believe that the model with a Blu-ray drive is overpriced, or would cause them to believe that Microsoft is greedy.

“I have three words for this idea—dumb, dumb, dumb.”

Pachter said he respects the people at Microsoft “immensely” and that they are “far from dumb.”

“I don’t actually believe the rumor,” he stated.

Rumors of the console were posted on both The Verge and NeoGAF last night, with the later’s source stating the console could launch as soon as October.

STaRzZ_HDII but still the xbox one i dont think was a big hit with anyone

When all the "new" games come out and are exclusive to next gen then people will buy, I don't see what is putting people off so much about buying one I bought one and wouldn't swap it for the world.

Exactly, there is so much hate for the next gen consoles and it's funny because most people doing it don't even have a next gen but when they do they can't stop talking about how amazing it is.

Aggie I like this, cut out the middleman. Buy them straight from Microsoft.

also bad because you can get games much cheaper on disc after a while of it being out rather than a download.

There a long way from implementing that. They would have to have 1-2 terabyte HDDs

Dominating I wanted this from the start

Problem is:
1)Gamers with no Internet
2)People with bad internet (like me)
It took me five hours to download Tiny Tina's Assault On Dragon Keep, about a 2 GB download.

It's simple, You don't buy one, People like me with fibre is the ideal internet for one of these... Buy a normal xbox one lol

I believe I've read somewhere that you don't have to have the full game downloaded before you can start playing. I know this was a feature in PS3 and maybe PS4 that was meant to be added on the Xbox One. Plus, the console will continue to download the game after you "turn off" the console.
