I think he should wait and save up 1k and build one with an i5 skylake processor and a 1070, so its more up to date and u can use VR, in the future if it becomes more affordable, but thats just an idea and pertains nothing to your build for that price

Mitochondria wrote If i am not mistaken the i5 competes with the latest Pentiums now.

Definitely not, Pentium's are sub $100 chips. No way they compete with $200 CPU's. The Pentium G4560 basically replaced the i3-6100 since it's $30 cheaper for the same performance basically, minus 200MHz. The Pentium's 4 threads still hold nothing to the i5's true 4 cores. Cores are better than hyperthreads.

It does not.

The i5-6500 will perform better than a 3930k in the vast majority of games due to it's significantly superior IPC. Only time the 3930k will beat the 6500 is if you're comparing them in a game that heavily utilises more than 4 cores.

I'd go with this, latest gen intel processor, although you may want to wait for AMD's Ryzen CPUs they seem quite good with the leaks I've seen around. Has an SSD for you OS and anything else you need to load really fast. 1TB HDD for bigger files, a 1060 although again you may want to wait a little while and save a bit for a 1070. Fractal Define Mini case has sound dampening and imo Fractal Cases are the best 9 times out of 10. Only included a 450w seasonic unit because it's more than enough to power what you're going to need to and it's got 80+ gold efficiency.

There's literally no reason to take an i5-7400 over the 6500 since they're the same price and the 6500 will perform better. Plus I keep hearing Kaby Lake runs pretty toasty. Although I do agree that Ryzen could bea good shout since you may be able to get a 4C/8T or 6C/12T unlocked Ryzen chip for a similar price to the i5's. 3GB GTX 1060 costs more than a 4GB 480 but the 4GB 480 performance is more comparable to the 6GB 1060 than 3GB so a 3GB 1060 is just a really shitty option at this point IMO.

If his budget was $1k, he'd have told us that. I think you should stop telling people to spend more money. It would be a waste for him to buy a GTX 1070 anyway if he's playing on a 1080p or lesser resolution monitor, which is information we don't have, so stop telling him to get a 1070. He can play VR games with a 480/1060 if he wants.

OP- Assuming you're using a 1080p monitor;

Since this is cheaper than what you were originally looking at, you can use the extra $60 or so to invest in an HDD, get 16GB RAM instead of 8GB, or get an 8GB RX 480 instead of 4GB RX 480. Or just save $60.
