He shouldnt have to pay for it. If the bank accidently deposited ur money into someones account thats the banks fault not his.

It's not his fault, it's the banks, even if he did spend it without querying it.

Banker's bonuses should pay the debt. Their mistake should be a costly one, we really shouldn't be giving them a free ride on stupidity.

If this happened to me I would withdraw all the money then once stashed away I would then ask the bank about why it was there. If it turned out to be a mistake then I would be "mugged" on the way to the bank

I wouldn't just start spending it.

He should definitely pay it back.

What kind of moron see's 31k in their account, knows it shouldn't be there, and spends it anyway without any thought for the consequences?
It was a simple mistake made by the bank which could have been easily corrected if he'd of called them, and any normal person would have.

If you are going to spend money that you know isn't yours, you should be prepared to pay it back.

I'm normal and wouldn't have contacted the bank about the situation.

The money was put into his account therefore making it his to do as he pleases with. I have seen to many people work their whole life and get nothing but a few grand just enough to live on. Banks have Billions I'm pretty sure they could spare 30k now and then but back to the point it was their error so they made the mistake the person who recieved the money has done nothing wrong taking money out of his bank that belongs to him he may not have earned it but it's in his bank so it's his. I would go to court with this if i were him as he has done nothing wrong. Why shouldn't people get a nice surprise once in a while other then slaving away the rest of your life earning just enough to live on with the occasional treat here and there, you can't even buy a house without being in debt for years unless your one of them people that are well off and carry 600k in your back pocket.

This actually happened to me a couple weeks ago. I made a deposit, and the bank kept looping it every day. So after an extra $1500 had been deposited into my account, I called them and brought up the issue.

Yes, the bank made a mistake. That doesn't mean it's his money, and he knows it. He has no right to spend that money.

The UK Government have no right to make people work until their 65, They have no right to cut pensions, They have no right to ask for our money for children in need when they have Millions yet we still give and give so why shouldn't we say **** you and take for once.

That's how i see it.

This isn't $10 we're talking about, it's 31,000.
It wasn't his money, he knew it wasn't his, that's why he lied about it.
If he'd of pleaded ignorance then maybe I could see why he shouldn't have to pay it back, but even then it's kind of hard to notice 31,000 in your account and not wonder why it's there.

In relation to what you said to SPEED, yes they do, you have the right to say no, and live with the consequences of that decision.
It looks like this guy did that and now he's 31,000 in debt.
Just because an opportunity comes up to do something doesn't mean you should just jump in head first.
Let's say he rang the bank and got the mistake reversed.
Is he any worse off? No.
He's in the exact same position he was in before he even checked his account.
It's not like he would have missed out on something that he was entitled to.

Also, nobody is thinking about the person whose money it actually was.
If you're all up for standing for the people, what if it was a woman who needed to feed her kids?
That person thought of himself, he was greedy, anything could have happened in the life of the person whose money it really was between the time he decided to not make the bank aware of it, and the time that they realized the mistake.

There is no situation in which he should have kept that money, unless he was homeless, starving, and stark naked.

After coming back to this topic and reading some of these replys its sad to see so many people that think its ok to spend money that doesnt belong to them.Nobody even mentioned the guy that was supposed to get the money, what about him hes now short 31k. It will come back to haunt the people that find it justified to spend that money...lets hope none of you are ever cheated out of anything that was intended for you but given to someone else by accident.

Guess your haunting me then.

Whoever the person was got their money back of course there was a delay on getting the money back but it was slashing going to be there even if the guy didn't spend it.

Sucks for the kid, going to be in debt for a long time, lol.

It's his fault and he should pay it back. If that was me I'd call up the bank and tell them, they'd probably even shoot me a couple hundred bucks just for being honest. Even if they didn't though, I still wouldn't be in debt like this kid.
