A teenager was left pleasantly surprised as he found that a whopping $31,000 had found its way into his account.

Turns out that his bank somehow deposited the cash by mistake. The 18 year-old shared the same name as another man who dropped off the money in the first place but the bank staff put it into the wrong account. That didn't stop him from spending it all. Within 10 days he'd taken out $20,000 in cash and spent an additional $5000 using his debit card.

Eventually he was stopped from withdrawing any more money and told about what had happened. For some reason he apparently tried to say it was an inheritance but the bank knew too well what they had done.

The bank have now threatened that there will be consequences if he does not find a way to return every penny of the money. But should he have to? It was the staff at the bank who made the error in the first place so surely the teenager hasn't actually stolen anything?

What would you do if you found a large amount of money just appear into your account?

Its not the guys fault, he should really go to court for this as it was their fault to have put it in the wrong account

I feel for this person and if I was in the same situation i would do the same spend all the money

I don't understand why the bank would make him repay.

It was clearly the banks fault.

If I found that much money randomly in my bank account, I'd call the bank or go into a branch and ask why it's there.
I wouldn't just start spending it.

He should definitely pay it back.

What kind of moron see's 31k in their account, knows it shouldn't be there, and spends it anyway without any thought for the consequences?
It was a simple mistake made by the bank which could have been easily corrected if he'd of called them, and any normal person would have.

If you are going to spend money that you know isn't yours, you should be prepared to pay it back.

He spent money he knew wasn't his. That is stealing. He should be made to pay back what he spent, but also the bank should have to pay the man whos money it actually was a fee for messing up.

And on the subject of what I would do... I would ask the bank why it was there, and then proceed from there.
