He will have to pay it back because in their policies in regard to there mistakes is in the fine print somewhere.

Even if he closed his account they can freeze his new one and can take money out of it.

Then Law is on the banks side so he has no chance of winning the case.

Lecter wrote If I found that much money randomly in my bank account, I'd call the bank or go into a branch and ask why it's there.
I wouldn't just start spending it.

He should definitely pay it back.

What kind of moron see's 31k in their account, knows it shouldn't be there, and spends it anyway without any thought for the consequences?
It was a simple mistake made by the bank which could have been easily corrected if he'd of called them, and any normal person would have.

If you are going to spend money that you know isn't yours, you should be prepared to pay it back.

What kind of moron hires an employee who can't properly maintain bank accounts?

So you're saying you've never made a mistake in your life?

You're all saying that if it was you and you got 31k in your account you'd spend it.
No, you wouldn't.
It's not your money, the bank made a transfer into the wrong account, mistakes happen.
It's stealing.
He should have to pay every cent back and that's fair.
He shouldn't have stole the money.
He's a moron for spending what wasn't his, and he knew wasn't his as when he was contacted he said it was an inheritance, obviously lying.

I've made mistakes. But I have not hired anyone incapable of avoiding such a massive mistake. Idiot...

Someone you meet on the street hands you $1000 and you go spend it, but then they come back to you and tell you that the $1000 was meant for someone else. What do you do? Work your ass off to repay the money which was clearly given to you although it was meant for someone else? Or tell them there's nothing you can do and it's their fault?

You're probably a teen, you don't have the capabilities of hiring anyone, for starters.
So you can't say that.
Mistakes happen man, you could die at any given moment by a random accident, does that mean someone is at fault? no.
Mistakes happen.
Idiot...

-Sarcasm- wrote A teenager was left pleasantly surprised as he found that a whopping $31,000 had found its way into his account.

Turns out that his bank somehow deposited the cash by mistake. The 18 year-old shared the same name as another man who dropped off the money in the first place but the bank staff put it into the wrong account. That didn't stop him from spending it all. Within 10 days he'd taken out $20,000 in cash and spent an additional $5000 using his debit card.

Eventually he was stopped from withdrawing any more money and told about what had happened. For some reason he apparently tried to say it was an inheritance but the bank knew too well what they had done.

The bank have now threatened that there will be consequences if he does not find a way to return every penny of the money. But should he have to? It was the staff at the bank who made the error in the first place so surely the teenager hasn't actually stolen anything?

What would you do if you found a large amount of money just appear into your account?
No he shouldn't have to pay, I would have done the exact same thing. It's their fault for messing up so they should pay the price.
