The higher the octane basically means it takes more pressure for the fuel to ignite by the sparkplug so theoretically having a higher octane needing more compression, you should shove more fuel in and go faster.

As far as cleaning, they all have the same amount of cleaners so that doesn't matter.

OP: stick with regular fuel. Won't make the slightest bit of difference in your car.

That is very wrong. Your instructor had taught you wrong on this particular subject, if you google this subject, then you will learn that there is a difference.

There really isnt any significant difference though

While there is not a significant difference, there is still a difference. Every little bit makes a difference. For example, say you have two identical cars, but one has a 87 tune and one has a 93 tune, the car with the 93 tune will slightly be faster assuming that all conditions were the same(same driver, same street, etc). And when you are racing, even something as simple as running a little bit of higher octane gas, could mean a win or a lose. And yes, i know that it is very unlikely that that example would actually occur, it was just a example.

Take the tunes out of the equation, OP is just asking about the different variants of fuel. We all know you can custom tune your car on almost ny octane level for say if you want to race, or if you are towing, or if you are in a high elevation area, etc. We're not looking at tunes, we're looking at just the gasoline octane rating.
