It really bugs me when people put three dots/periods after they say something.

Example(s):
"Wow... Good job..."
"This is an amazing post..."

It makes me think that they are upset or depressed. That, or they are trying to break the 20 characters limit.

Opinions?

Lastly, I know everyone wants to be the "cool guy" that posts in the exact way that the poster is ranting about, so if you want to, go ahead. But, it isn't going to make me upset or whatever it is you're trying to do. Might get you some internet friends though, so go for it!

Actually if someone put's something like,

"Wow... Good job..."
"This is an amazing post..."

The punctuation doesn't count towards the 20 character limit. I think spaces, commas, periods, apostrophes, parentheses, and that type of stuff, don't count as actual characters towards the 20 characters. As for why people do that, I have no clue, but I have seen more people doing it recently and I will occasionally use if I feel it's a proper use for that situation.

I actually didn't know that punctuation didn't count towards the character limit. As for every once and a while usage, that's fine. Also when the situation calls for it, it's fine.

But when people do it on every post they make, it's annoying.

In my opinion, i think that the people that say :
"Wow good job "
"This is an amazing post "
are just being sarcastic.

Those three dots (ellipses) have nothing to do with whether or not someone is depressed, or upset.

"Ellipsis is a series of dots that usually indicates an intentional omission of a word, sentence, or whole section from a text without altering its original meaning.Depending on their context and placement in a sentence, ellipses can also indicate an unfinished thought, a slight pause, and nervous or awkward silence." - Wikipedia

It's possible that those who put ellipses (...) in their posts are using them for the one of the intended purposes.

In all of the examples that you gave, those ellipses could have been used to show sarcasm, or to show an intentional silence. Sure, it's not necessarily the best way of doing so, but it's still valid.

I find them okay but it gets annoying when people use them too much.

Generally when I do it, I use it as sarcasm and the like.

It becomes a habit once you start. I used to do it on some other forums but don't do it anymore

I sometimes use an ellipsis but I do not use it intentionally to annoy people, secondly I use it in the correct place of the sentence
