So lets say you killed a dozen people and you get sentenced 1,000 years in prison.
The only reason why they do that is so you stay in prison and you don't get out. If the death penalty was still in order in all states, I am sure they would do that as they don't want to house another inmate with a 1000 year conviction.

I'm pretty sure there's a lot of reasons.
Aside from the reasons other people have stated, I think it's a deterrent.
If you see someone get 1000 years in Prison, it's a pretty big sign that you shouldn't do it.
It also sounds good in the media when a person is particularly vile and it also gives the victims families that little extra than just saying, 'He's going to be locked up for a long time.'

If there is one thing uk could learn from america it's the way they sentence people, over here if you kill someone you would be lucky to get past the 15year mark, most people get like 10-15 years(and get let out way under that) and a lot get way less then that (5-10yrs), it's ridiculous.

If you kill someone you get 10-15 years in America?

In america Murder is 25 to life and almost guaranteed life.

No, in the uk someone would get 10-15 yrs for murder.

also, if you get sentenced to life (25 years) you can get on parole for good behaviour, with 10000+ years, that wont happen...

Doing certain crimes will stack up. Even though its not logical its still law. Say someone did 3 crimes for 40 years, 2 for 15 years, and 5 crimes for 30 years. It would stack up to 300 years and that would be their sentence.

They're basically just saying, you are going to be in Prison until you are dead. There is no way of being released.

A life sentence is 25 Years. So 1000 years is just so they have no chance of getting out
