Hey guys! I have a question that I've been wanting to ask for a very long time. Why do people get sentenced to life in prison but they also get +1,000 years?! Why +1,000 years? What does that mean?
+Rep for the most reasonable answer.

Edit: I wasn't clear enough on the question. Why not just get sentenced to life in prison. Why add the 1,000 years if you are already sentenced to life in prison?! It's not like you are going to live 500 years more.

Thank you

Because they have committed crimes for which ordinarily they could not get a life sentence so the judge just tacks on consecutive terms which becomes a life sentence.

I think it depends on the crime committed.
Say you kidnap someone, you get 50 years in prison.
Say you kill someone, you get 100 years in prison.
That's 150 years, do this to multiple people it adds up.
Not to mention theft and other crimes.

I am not 100% sure this is true but this did happen to my friends dad.
He robbed a store then shot and killed 9 people.
He was sentenced life in prison along with a couple of centuries but soon after a month he committed suicide.

I think it just ensures that there is no way they can get out early for good behavior or something.

I always thought that it was because they have committed multiple crimes that add up to that amount.

Or something else. I guess there's kind of a reason for it.

Honestly I'm not exactly sure but I remember someone told me that it's because even if they have life they have a chance of parol . So they can get out that's why they add 1000+ or so just to be safe, that's what I heard so I can't be positive.

Its because when you get life you get 1000 years so life in prison is 1000 years

If there is one thing uk could learn from america it's the way they sentence people, over here if you kill someone you would be lucky to get past the 15year mark, most people get like 10-15 years(and get let out way under that) and a lot get way less then that (5-10yrs), it's ridiculous.

If you kill someone you get 10-15 years in America?

In america Murder is 25 to life and almost guaranteed life.

being sentenced to "life" in jail, means 25-30 years.

+1000 years is the easiest way to convict a serious criminal, I think its a bit over the top but hey, there idea
