I'm looking to upgrade my GPU to something with more power/performance and I have my heart set on a GTX 1080. I want to know if upgrading from a GTX 970 to a GTX 1080 would be a wise upgrade? How noticeable would the performance difference be? I can live with dropping the $ if it'll be noticeable.

I plan to game at 1080p for the time being, but plan to dip into 1440p gaming in the future as a later upgrade.

On a side note, I also plan to upgrade my CPU and motherboard.

My current specs:
i5 4690k
Asrock z87 Fatal1ty Killer
MSI GTX 970
16gb RAM

I've had most of this setup since 2013, aside from from GTX 970.

Let me say this, I want to get into streaming, so I'm looking into upgrading to an i7 7700k as the CPU of choice. If you guys could recommend a motherboard to pair with the i7 that won't break the bank, but would be a nice upgrade, let me know!

Thanks for any help/replies!

7700k would be stupid, just a waste of money. Either go with Coffee Lake, or Ryzen.

A GTX 1080 is a pretty substantial upgrade from a GTX 970. That said, you're not going to notice a hige benefit at 1080p, especially 60Hz. Instead of spending $1000+ on components you're not going to utilise, spend some money on a new monitor, buy a GPU to match it, and then you can consider a CPU upgrade.

If it's any consolation I have a 144hz monitor already.

Then yeah, a GTX 1080 would be a nice fit for a 1080p 144Hz monitor, and an i7 upgrade would be nice, but definitely not a 7700k. Either grab a used Haswe(Refresh) i7 so you don't need to upgrade RAM and motheboard, or go with Coffee Lake. An i5-8400 would be fine, and better than a 7700k. Also, while a GTX 1080 would be nice, I'd personally grab a GTX 1070Ti unless it's less than a $/£30-40 difference or so.
