Hi everybody,

I need a double advice about PC building.

First of all I am helping a friend building his own Gaming PC and would like to have some advice about a possible build as even if I have some good knowledge in PC hardware I am far from an expert.

His budget is around 1800$ with an absolute maximum of 2000$ all in Canadian Dollars currency.

He wants obviously a gaming PC (mid-high-end with this budget) that will be able to run beautifully and smoothly the AAA games principally.

He will use a TV as a monitor so no need to buy one, he however needs all the other parts. The case/keyboard/mouse don't need to be flashy or RGB absolutely although it can be nice. He is mostly interested in the performance of the PC and not in its aesthetics.

He wants to have all the parts around Christmas.

Finally, a simple windows 10 software will do the job.

Now for the second part of my advice-seeking, I want to use this occasion (my friend ordering his parts and building a PC) to upgrade my own PC.

Here are my specs:

Software : Windows 10 Home - 64 bit

Processor : Intel Core i5-4590 CPU @ 3.30 GHZ

Ram : 8GB

Graphic Card : Nvidia GeForce GTX 970

My budget is around 500$ to 600$ and from what I observed the bottleneck of my system would be my CPU so I am looking to upgrade it along with adding a bit more RAM to get up to 12 and maybe a little extra hardware memory if possible. I also need some thermal paste also then.

My PC is obviously also for gaming almost exclusively

Any advice is greatly appreciated

Thank you

Your CPU is not going to be your bottleneck in the majority of games. What do you mean by "hardware memory"? Why do you need thermal paste exactly?

What monitor(s) are you using?
What games do you play?
What exactly are you looking for better performance in?
Is your budget $500-600CAD or USD?

Also, what is the make and model of your case and PSU? What motherboard do you have? What RAM and storage do you have?

For your friend, he's still 2 months away from building so I'll give you a rough guide but prices will more than likely change so it might not still make sense in 2 months.

CPU: [ Register or Signin to view external links. ] ($239.99 @ Memory Express)
CPU Cooler: [ Register or Signin to view external links. ] ($29.99 @ Newegg Canada Marketplace)
Motherboard: [ Register or Signin to view external links. ] ($172.99 @ Newegg Canada)
Memory: [ Register or Signin to view external links. ] ($179.99 @ Newegg Canada)
Storage: [ Register or Signin to view external links. ] ($199.99 @ Newegg Canada)
Video Card: [ Register or Signin to view external links. ] ($509.99 @ Newegg Canada)
Case: [ Register or Signin to view external links. ] ($119.99 @ Newegg Canada)
Power Supply: [ Register or Signin to view external links. ] ($94.99 @ Newegg Canada)
Monitor: [ Register or Signin to view external links. ] ($429.99 @ Memory Express)
Total: $1977.91

Could get a 1440p monitor instead of 4k to save $100-125 or so. Just grab a cheap kb/mouse combo for now and then he can upgrade to a nice mouse and mech keyboard in the future.

Thank you for the advice and sorry for the long reply but I have been quite busy

SO first for my friend he doesn't need a monitor like I said, he will use his TV. So if you could propose a new build with the monitor removed it would be awesome. Also we will probably buy it next Monday
finally to get some discounts during the cyber Monday, so any offer that you may recommend would be great.

For myself, the 500-600$ budget is also in Canadian dollars, my case is an nzxt phantom, the motherboard is a Gigabyte Technology Co. Ltd. G1.Sniper and my hardware memory is a SanDisk SDSSDHP256G (SSD) and a 1TB TOSHIBA DT01ACA100 (SATA). I will go open my PC to see what is the power supply as I am not sure. However, I would like to know what is the bottleneck if it is not the processor, because it is often running at 100% and I think my graphic card is good enough for most games.
