North Korea test fired yet another ballistic missile yesterday that may have landed 230 miles off Japan's coast, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said.

The missile was fired shortly before midnight Japan time on Friday, Shinzo Abe convened an emergency meeting of officials shortly after the missile was detected and confirmed.

Japan's chief cabinet secretary, Yoshihide Suga, said the missile flew for about 45 minutes before landing in Japan's exclusive economic zone, which stretches some 200 nautical miles from its coast. Suga reported that there were no immediate reports of damage from the missile.

Top U.S. and South Korean officials met to discuss military options after the launch; Marine General Joseph Dunford and U.S. Pacific Commander Admiral Harry Harris called South Korean Joint Chief of Staff General Lee Sun-jin to discuss the commitment of the alliance and military response options.

There were indications earlier this week that North Korea was preparing for another ballistic missiles test and some experts had predicted the communist nation would launch the test on Thursday in celebration of "Victory Day", a military holiday in North Korea.

Regardless, the new test represents a setback in efforts to reduce tensions in the Korean peninsula. China, North Korea's longtime ally, has been pressuring the regime to abandon its nuclear and ballistic missile programs but so far has little to show for it. Experts say North Korea is known to have the capability to send missiles to all of South Korea, Japan, as well as Guam; and the July 4 test-firing of its first intercontinental ballistic missile indicated the regime also might be capable of striking the U.S. mainland as well.

This latest missile test comes a day before the U.S. prepares to conduct a new experimental test of its THAAD (Terminal High Altitude Area Defense) anti-missile system. At present, there are two THAAD anti-missile batteries deployed in South Korea to defend against the North's short and medium ranged ballistic missiles; the U.S. provided system has been controversial since some claim it could be overwhelmed by a swam-like attack from the Pyongyang regime.

Also, the Chinese are upset with the Lockheed-Martin manufactured THAAD system; they claim that the THAAD's powerful radar gives the U.S. and South Korea capability not only to spot missiles fired from North Korea but to peer deep inside China and monitor military activities. Russia is also upset over the deployment of THAAD in South Korea.

There have been several missile tests fired this year by the North Koreans that have splashed into waters of Japan. There are currently several advanced missile defense systems protecting Japan, including a fleet of Aegis-equipped destroyers along with the Patriot Pac-3 missile system.

Now that they have ICBM's they're not so much of a joke.

They're actually being pretty smart about this. Letting the whole world know that they have the ability to defend themselves is important for a country that small and hated.
Especially when the overthrowing of their regime has been a likely eventuality for a long time now.
This changes all of that.

The likelihood that any country is now going to risk regime change in NK has dropped dramatically because the risks are so huge now.
They've made themselves untouchable while the rest of the world has sat condemning them and giving them stern looks.

No. These are all just "shows of force" to intimidate other countries; in intimidation, they've succeeded and have gotten the attention of multiple countries. The North Korean regime seems like it's going to be intact for quite some time and they're just making sure that the rest of the world knows what type of arsenal NK has.

The United States military, yet alone, is capable of defeating any military on the plant within the span of two months. Easily.
People tend to forget, even noted by politicians like Ben Shapiro, that Saddam Hussein's military was the fourth largest military on Earth, and was finished in a span of three weeks.

The United States military is comparatively the most powerful war machine in history.

North Korea's got nothing on us, Son!

Wrong, I highly doubt the US could invade countries such as NK, Russia, China or even some European super powers. The US would play the pissing contest and fall flat. What makes the US such a deadly force are its allies and influence.

Saddam Hussein's military was the fourth largest military on Earth, and was finished in a span of three weeks.

Yet again, Allies are key.

The US led invasion would not of been possible without British, Aussie and Peshmerga help.

The United States military is comparatively the most powerful war machine in history.

At the height of the British Empire or Mongol Army I would have to disagree.

North Korea's got nothing on us, Son!

Probably true, apart from ICBM's ready to fire at your major cities and infrastructure at the drop a hat.

The tensions between US, Russia, NK etc could easily destroy the planet and having people in power that like dick measuring contests is not healthy with the recent NK developments.

All valid points made. But come on, North Korea?
