The media goes for what sells. It's sad to say but the mayority of people don't care about countries like Afghanistan or places like that. The media just tries to sell. :/

Care to give some examples?

If this is the case, then i would say that each news network chooses to take advantage of stories that will make them the most money and push their agenda.

There is a lot of things that happen every day, and not everything can be covered.

Why are people surprised or more outraged that this has happened at the start of Ramadan?
There are terrorist attacks so often in the Middle East that I don't even think it entered their minds whether or not they were doing this at a 'special time.'

These people don't care about regular Muslims, they don't even consider the vast majority of them Muslim, which is why they have no problems slaughtering them.

It's because of a flaw in human psychology called empathy.
When it comes to tragedies like this, empathy is triggered in people if at least one of these two things are hit:

1) Is it happening relatively close to where I live?
2) Is it happening to people who share the same lifestyle and values as me?

Western media, mainly the US and UK, are the dominant forces in world media.
So for the media companies in these countries an attack in the Middle East is:

1) It's not close
2) It's happening to people who don't share the same values and lifestyle as people in their countries.

So the media chooses not to cover it as heavily simply because they know that people don't really care about it.
People need to recognize this flaw in their psychology and stop confusing how they think they should feel about something like this with how they actually do feel about something like this.

Relying on empathy when it comes to getting through large scale attacks and events is truly a horrible solution.
Studies have shown that if you put a picture of one starving child in front of a person, give that child a name and a little back story, and then ask people how much they will donate to help that child, the amount is quite high.
But the amount donated gets lower and lower the more starving children you put in front of them, even if that one child with a name and a story is still part of the group.

It's easier to focus on one child and feel like you're making a personal difference than it is to focus on one hundred children, or one hundred thousand children, and feel like your contribution isn't being recognized as your contribution.

People need to make a conscious effort to care about things which their psychology is preventing them from caring about, but nobody thinks that much effort is worth it, especially when their 'contribution' is a 'heartfelt' post on Facebook to show their friends how much they care about the poor and downtrodden people in the world.

The truth is that most people don't care and they're fine with not caring.

You'll be hit with all kinds of excuses, but if people were honest with you and could just admit that their first instinct when they hear a story like this is, "Well that's a shame, what's on telly?" a lot less time would be wasted on your part.
