This thread is going to contain as much detail as possible on the basics of getting a tattoo, despite the fact this is a gaming community there are a lot of members who wish to get a tattoo however struggle to make the decision.

First I'll start with laws, as most people are aware the legal age of a tattoo is 18 both in the U.K & U.S, however in U.S with parental consent you can be tattooed between 16-18. As for the U.K anyone who tattoos under the legal age classifies as assault on a minor.

Also, if you have any serious medical issues find out if you're allowed before conducting any kind of research.

Secondly, making your own decision.

Don't let the most recent "trend" or "because it's cool" make your decisions, what may seem like a good tattoo(s) at the time, in the future may be your biggest mistake, not to mention quite a lot of money to get lasered or covered up.

If you've found a design you really like and have thought about it for quite some time try ask them to design you something related to that one, for example you get a picture of a compass but you also want a snake etc.

Personally, I would not go for something big like a sleeve at first. You may hate the pain & have an incomplete tattoo.

Quite a lot of people will have parents who despise the fact you want a tattoo, which is understandable and respecting that is up to you.

It is always up to you, no one else.

Third, choosing the design and where you want it.

When choosing a design, it can come to size/design, both of which can make a decent tattoo look bad due to the nature of it. Take your time choosing, don't just look at something and think "yeah I'll get that" find something that has sentimental value, maybe something a little small.

Placement, I hate to say this as I love tattoos but, placement can affect you getting certain jobs. Not all jobs, but some. So be careful when choosing. Places I'd personally avoid are hands/face/neck. However, if you wish for that then it's up to you.

Offensive tattoos are a no-go for me as I'm a very "respectful" person, so I'd steer clear from getting one.

Also, finding the right artist for you. Check out some of there previous designs/work maybe even check out there studio.

I'll leave some sites at the bottom with some good designs.

Fourth, pain threshold.

I have only had 5 tattoos in my life time, each one varying in pain and changes on different people. Here is a simple pain chart for each area of the body.

From personal experience, Id say the sole of my foot was the most painful then back of my leg. However, the pain went shortly afterwards.

Fifth, preparation.

Believe it or not, there are some simple steps you can take before having a tattoo.

Drink plenty of water the night before to stay hydrated. The more hydrated, the better the ink.

Eat something containing sugar, it will make you feel better during the process.

Paying for the best, can only result in the best. Don't go get one because it's cheap/free. Or you'll get something that looks cheap/free. Making sure they're a professional artist.

Sixth, the process.

I found that the most affective way of passing time by when having it done is talking, perhaps a close friend or even the tattooist themselves.

"A good tatooist, is the cleanest tattooist" once she/he has cleaned/shaved the area check he's put the design where you want it. Whether it's just a tiny bit out let them know. If it's on your back, ask for them to take a picture. It doesn't sound nit-picky it's your first tattoo and they'll understand.

Finally, protecting yourself and that beauty tat you just got.

Once the tattoo is complete, they'll wrap in cling film which is to protect it as it is an open wound! Do not take it off for atleast 2 hours as this can lead to infections. If you're going out, put some sun cream over it and make sure to keep it moisturised but not to much.

Here are the sites I mainly used to get some ideas. I wish you the best with your decisions!

Behance and google are 2 good places to search by.
