Two West Virginia police officers were injured in a New Year's Day shootout when they stopped a suspected stolen vehicle and the driver opened fire, an emergency dispatch official said.

The two Lewisburg officers, and the driver, were being treated for injuries that were not life-threatening, said Donna Hinkle, administrator of the Greenbrier County 911 center.

A second man was also arrested when he passed the scene and opened fire at the officers before he left Interstate 64 westbound and was captured about 90 minutes later in woods, Hinkle said. She said police were tipped off by a passer-by.

Hinkle said the shooting occurred about 4 p.m. outside Lewisburg.

While Hinkle said the suspect suffered a knee injury, she did not have specifics on the officers' injuries. Media reports said one officer was shot in a protective vest, while the other was grazed.

Hinkle said the driver of a second vehicle also fired at the officers and then pulled away. The vehicle then left the highway, and the alleged shooter was captured in woods.

Hinkle said she did not know if the two drivers were "in tandem."

Hinkle said the first vehicle had a stolen North Carolina tag.

The first car was stopped after its tag was recognized by a license plate recognition program, Hinkle said. The two officers were then dispatched to track down the vehicle.
