What is Ebola & How It Can Be Acquired

Ebola is a a disease of humans and other primates caused by an 'Ebolavirus'. Symptoms start two days to three weeks after contracting the virus, with a fever, sore throat, muscle pain, and headaches. Typically, vomiting, diarrhea, and rash follow, along with decreased function of the liver and kidneys. Around this time, affected people may begin to bleed both within the body and externally.

The virus may be acquired upon contact with blood or bodily fluids of an infected human or other animal. Spreading through the air has not been documented in the natural environment. Fruit bats are believed to be a carrier and may spread the virus without being affected. Once human infection occurs, the disease may spread between people, as well. Male survivors may be able to transmit the disease via semen for nearly two months. To make the diagnosis, typically other diseases with similar symptoms such as malaria, cholera and other viral hemorrhagic fevers are first excluded. To confirm the diagnosis, blood samples are tested for viral antibodies, viral RNA, or the virus itself.

History of Ebola

Origin

The first identified case of Ebola was on 26 August 1976, in Yambuku, a small rural village in Mongala District in northern Democratic Republic of the Congo. The first victim, and the index case for the disease, was village school headmaster Mabalo Lokela, who had toured an area near the Central African Republic border along the Ebola river between 1222 August. On 8 September he died of what would become known as the Ebola virus species of the ebolavirus.

Types of Ebola Viruses

Zaire

[ Register or Signin to view external links. ]
Ebola is a virus named after a river in Zaire, its first site of discovery. A usually fatal filovirus which affects monkeys, apes and humans, it is a cause of viral hemorrhagic fever -- there are others. Filoviruses are string-shaped, often with a little hook or loop at one end. Another, somewhat less deadly filovirus is the Marburg virus.

Reston

[ Register or Signin to view external links. ]
Reston virus was first described in 1990 as a new "strain" of Ebola virus, a result of mutation from Ebola virus. It is the single member of the species Reston ebolavirus, which is included into the genus Ebolavirus, family Filoviridae, order Mononegavirales. Reston virus is named after Reston, Virginia, US, where the virus was first discovered.

Reston was discovered in crab-eating macaques from Hazleton Laboratories (now Covance) in 1989. This attracted significant media attention due to the proximity of Reston to the Washington, DC metro area, and the lethality of a closely related Ebola virus. Despite its status as a level-4 organism, Reston virus is non-pathogenic to humans, though hazardous to monkeys; the perception of its lethality was compounded by the monkey's coinfection with Simian hemorrhagic fever virus.

Bundibugyo

[ Register or Signin to view external links. ]
The species Bundibugyo ebolavirus is the taxonomic home of one virus, Bundibugyo virus (BDBV), that forms filamentous virions and is closely related to the infamous Ebola virus (EBOV). The virus causes severe disease in humans in the form of viral hemorrhagic fever and is a Select Agent, World Health Organization Risk Group 4 Pathogen (requiring Biosafety Level 4-equivalent containment), National Institutes of Health/National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Category A Priority Pathogen, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Category A Bioterrorism Agent, and is listed as a Biological Agent for Export Control by the Australia Group.

Timeline

1976 - The first identified case of Ebola was on 26 August 1976, in Yambuku, a small rural village in Mongala District in northern Democratic Republic of the Congo.

1989 - Ebola-Reston virus was introduced into quarantine facilities in Virginia and Pennsylvania by monkeys imported from the Philippines.

1990 - Ebola-Reston virus was introduced once again into quarantine facilities in Virginia, and Texas by monkeys imported from the Philippines. Four humans developed antibodies but did not get sick.

1992 - Ebola-Reston virus was introduced into quarantine facilities in Sienna, Italy by monkeys imported from the same export facility in the Philippines that was involved in the episodes in the United States. No humans were infected.

1994 - Scientist became ill in Ivory Coast after conducting an autopsy on a wild chimpanzee in the Tai Forest. The patient was treated in Switzerland.

1996 - A medical professional traveled from Gabon to Johannesburg, South Africa, after having treated Ebola virus-infected patients and thus having been exposed to the virus. He was hospitalized, and a nurse who took care of him became infected and died.

1996 - Laboratory contamination in Russia, one case - one death.

2001 - Occurred in Gulu, Masindi, and Mbarara districts of Uganda. The three most important risks associated with Ebola virus infection were attending funerals of Ebola hemorrhagic fever case-patients, having contact with case-patients in one's family, and providing medical care to Ebola case-patients without using adequate personal protective measures.

2003 - Outbreak occurred in the districts of Mbomo and Kll in Cuvette Ouest Dpartement, Republic of Congo. 128 died.

2004 - Outbreak occurred in Yambio county of southern Sudan. This outbreak was concurrent with an outbreak of measles in the same area, and several suspected EHF cases were later reclassified as measeles cases.

2007 - Outbreak occurred in Kasai Occidental Province, Republic of Congo. The outbreak was declared over November 20. Last confirmed case on October 4 and last death on October 10.

2008 - First known occurrence of Ebola-Reston in pigs in the Philippines Strain closely similar to earlier strains. Six workers from the pig farm and slaughterhouse developed antibodies but did not become sick.

2011 - The Ugandan Ministry of Health informed the public that a patient with suspected Ebola Hemorrhagic fever died on May 6, 2011 in the Luwero district, Uganda. The quick diagnosis from a blood sample of Ebola virus was provided by the new CDC Viral Hemorrhagic Fever laboratory installed at the Uganda Viral Research Institute (UVRI).

2014/Present - Ongoing outbreak across multiple countries in West Africa. Number of patients is constantly evolving due to the ongoing investigation.

CDC Guidelines

Symptoms

- Fever (greater than 38.6C or 101.5F)
- Severe headache
- Muscle pain
- Weakness
- Diarrhea
- Vomiting
- Abdominal (stomach) pain
- Unexplained hemorrhage (bleeding or bruising)

Prevention

- Practice careful hygiene. For example, wash your hands with soap and water or an alcohol-based hand sanitizer and avoid contact with blood and body fluids.

- Do not handle items that may have come in contact with an infected persons blood or body fluids (such as clothes, bedding, needles, and medical equipment).

- Avoid funeral or burial rituals that require handling the body of someone who has died from Ebola.

- Avoid contact with bats and nonhuman primates or blood, fluids, and raw meat prepared from these animals.

- Avoid hospitals where Ebola patients are being treated. The U.S. embassy or consulate is often able to provide advice on facilities.

- After you return, monitor your health for 21 days and seek medical care immediately if you develop any symptoms.

Treatment

No FDA-approved vaccine or medicine (e.g., antiviral drug) is available for Ebola.

Symptoms of Ebola are treated as they appear. The following basic interventions, when used early, can significantly improve the chances of survival:

Providing intravenous fluids (IV)and balancing electrolytes (body salts)
Maintaining oxygen status and blood pressure
Treating other infections if they occur.

F.A.Q.

How long does Ebola live on surfaces?
Ebola virus can live on dry surfaces, such as doorknobs and countertops, & can survive for several hours; however, virus in body fluids (such as blood) can survive up to several days at room temperature.

How is it spread?
There are several ways the virus can be spread to others. These include:

- direct contact with the blood or body fluids (including but not limited to feces, saliva, sweat, urine, vomit, and semen) of a person who is sick with Ebola

- contact with objects (like needles and syringes) that have been contaminated with the blood or body fluids of an infected person or with infected animals

- The virus in the blood and body fluids can enter another person's body through broken skin or unprotected mucous membranes in, for example, the eyes, nose, or mouth.

How is it killed?
Ebola virus is killed with hospital-grade disinfectants (such as household bleach, do NOT drink).

What's the advice for travelers in at-risk areas?
Following these simple precautions will minimise your risk of catching Ebola virus disease:
- don't handle dead animals or their raw meat
- don't eat bushmeat
- avoid contact with patients who have symptoms
- avoid having sex with people in risk areas (use a condom if you do)
- make sure fruit and veg is washed and peeled before you eat it
- wash hands frequently using soap and water (or alcohol hand rubs when soap is not available) as this destroys the virus

What if I think I have Ebola in the UK?
If you feel unwell with symptoms such as fever, chills, muscle aches, a headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, a sore throat or a rash within 21 days of coming back from Guinea, Liberia or Sierra Leone, you should stay at home and immediately telephone 111 or 999 and explain that you have recently visited West Africa.

These services will provide advice and arrange for you to be seen in a hospital if necessary so the cause of your illness can be determined.

Who is most at risk?
- healthcare workers
- family members or others in close contact with infected people
- mourners who have direct contact with the bodies of the deceased as part of burial ceremonies.

Just a small update following on from the infected person in Spain. Three more people have been quarantined, including the nurses husband.

I had tickets to the Dallas Cowboys v Houston Texans game last Sunday. I decided not to go to Dallas.

But anyways, if you were to tell me all this was happening not last year I would have said you were crazy.

Very nice topic, very informative.

I'd like to say what everyone is currently thinking.

Depopulation has begun

I found this pretty interesting:

On Friday, Howard University Hospital in Washington, DC, announced it was caring for a patient with possible Ebola symptoms who had recently traveled from Nigeria.

There's been a lot of talk about banning travel to the infected regions.

This story was posted on October 4th, and we haven't heard anything in regards to another case in the US, but it's just another example of how people are traveling back and forth to the regions putting so many at risk. I don't understand why there aren't bans put in place prohibiting this. Surely it would discourage the spread of Ebola. Honestly I could rant about it.

The first person to be diagnosed with Ebola in the U.S. has died, a Dallas hospital announced minutes ago.
Liberian Thomas Eric Duncan, who recently traveled from West Africa to Dallas, had been in isolation at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas since Sept. 28.

It wasnt immediately known what would happen to his body, which could remain contagious for several days. Guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention call for the remains to be immediately shrouded in plastic and double-bagged in leak-proof bags at the hospital, then promptly cremated or buried in an airtight casket.

Duncans death comes four days after his condition was downgraded from serious to critical. Over the weekend, he had begun receiving brincidofovir, an experimental antiviral drug which recently gained emergency approval from the FDA.

Duncan, 42, is also the first person known to die of Ebola in the United States. The highly contagious virus has killed more than 3,400 people in West Africa in 2014, the World Health Organization estimates.

Hopefully with his death, the CDC can look further into a cure. I know that sounds terrible, but oh well. Thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

I wasn't thinking that.
But I guess that makes me a brainwashed sheep, so my opinion doesn't count in the conspiracy theorist's eyes.
