If you want to jailbreak your PS3 and it is over the update of 3.55 then you will need to downgrade it. This guide will help you understand downgrading and if it is possible for you to do it.

What a downgrade is
A downgrade is basically taking the firmware version that your console is currently on and bringing it back down to a lower firmware version, in this case it would need to be brought down to 3.55 in order for it to be jailbroken.

Can you downgrade your PS3?
This all depends what type of console you have. First off if you have a super slim (latest model of PS3) then unfortunately you cannot downgrade. But if you have a slim or PHAT you may be able to.

The next thing you would have to check is the model number on the back on your PS3. You should find it in the corresponding place to what this image shows.

Here are two lists, they show the model numbers of the PHAT and slim PS3's and what model numbers can be downgraded.

Fat models:

CECHH
CECHI
CECHJ
CECHK
CECHL
CECHM
CECHN
CECHO
CECHP
CECHQ

Slim models:

CECH- 20XXA
CECH- 20XXB
CECH- 21XXA
CECH- 21XXB
CECH- 25XXA*
CECH- 25XXB*

* - May or may not be downgradable. Can verify by datecode on label on the PS3.

How to downgrade your PS3
There are two options for this. Using an E3 flasher and opening your PS3 to do the downgrade yourself, or to buy a downgrading service from someone (where you send your ps3 to them and they downgrade it for you).

An E3 flasher varies in price, you can find ones for good prices on Ebay and Amazon. I personally have no experience in using an E3 flasher so here is a video to show how you do it.



However if you're worried of messing up your PS3 or if you can't afford the E3 flasher you can buy a downgrade service instead. Once again people offer these services on Ebay and Amazon and they are usually cheaper then E3 flashers.

The blu-ray drive is just the bit that reads the discs. You can downgrade still yes. I would recommend getting a new blu-ray drive fitted though as having your games on the HDD will fill up a lot of space over time

You can actually downgrade other models with NAND downgrade. It's a bit more expensive that NOR though.

If it's already Jailbroken you downgrade and change CFW with a USB. But you need a E3 Flasher to firstly downgrade it.
