Synopsis

Microsoft goes karaoke for Christmas with Lips, which comes complete with two wireless motion-tracking microphones. It works a treat, with the real artists providing video backdrops and easy on-screen instructions all you have to do is follow the words and bars, scoring points for timing and pitch. Lips is also compatible with a wide range of MP3 players, which means you can add any DRM-free tracks to the game when the handful it provides pall. If you want the full video backing, however, there are only 40 tracks available so far on Xbox Live which is far less than the likes of Singstar Abba, Guitar Hero and Rock Band. Lips is fun while it lasts and beautifully produced but by the time you're on to the turkey sandwiches on Boxing Day, you'll have heard and seen all it has to offer.

Gameplay

Lips is a video game on the Xbox 360 that allows gamers to sing song to get a high rank or just sing along for fun with the family. This game is great when at a birthday party or you could even play it by yourself if you're at home alone. This song allows two people to sing as a duet or you can sing solo. As it is a singing game, it comes along with two wireless microphones that are compatible with other music games. One white microphone and one black microphone. These two microphone are supplied with two AA Duracell batteries when you purchase the game. In game, when you shake the microphone you make in game musical instrument noises, these could range from the Cowbell, Maracas and even cymbals. You can also make gestures like hand clapping and cheering by pressing certain buttons to portray how your performance went. In game, you can purchase songs from the Xbox 360 marketplace to sing along to with lyrics, or you can import music from your hard drive to play your favourite music that aren't already on Lips or that can't be downloaded. Also, songs that are downloaded from the marketplace or are already in game, then the music video of the song will play in the background while you sing along. However, when imported your music won't have any lyrics and a custom music video so you will just have to sing along to the beat. You will still earn score depending on how well you sing. Once you're done with a song that you have sung it will stay in your library so you can sing it in the future if you wish to. The age restriction is 12+ because there are some songs that aren't suitable for smaller children. Lips also has rankings where you can see who is the best singer in the world at the game (when connected to XBL) and what song you achieved your highest score in. The rankings are pretty accurate and you can compare with friends and see which trophies and/or achievements that you have achieved.

Graphics

The developers for Lips have worked amazingly on making the graphics portion of this game stand out. The effects in the game are stunning, the points system is pretty exhilarating and it really seems as if it's going to come out of your screen. The effect and the microphones have all sorts of different colours that contrast amazingly with each other and this is very pleasurable to look at and puts you in the mood to dance and sing. I can honestly say that I was impressed when I bought this game judging by how it looked I didn't think it was going to be good. I put the game in, stuck my HDMI cable in and I was literally gobsmacked with the quality. I don't think that the developers could have done a better job.
