What Seeds Do?

World generation seeds were added to Minecraft on February 23rd as part of the 1.3 update. A seed is a string of characters used to provide a starting point for the terrain generation algorithm when creating a new world.

Using the same seed to generate two separate worlds will generate the same terrain consistently even on different computers. This means that seeds can be shared between players to generate the same world between them. However, the player's initial spawn point will be random.

To use a seed you have seen on this website enter it into the seed box when creating a new world:

Not entering a Seed will generate a random world.

How to: Extract Seed & Share them.

Go to: [ Register or Signin to view external links. ]

Then on your keyboard, Hit Windows +R

Enter this in the box:

%appdata%/.minecraft/

Hit OK, and click Saves, choose a World then click the level.dat

Extract that to your Desktop or somewhere easy to find.

Open it on [ Register or Signin to view external links. ]

Click: Show Seed and you now have it for sharing.

Seeds FAQ:
Thanks to the MC Forums

Will the same seed always result in the same World?

Short answer yes, long answer sometimes.
Different operating systems may give different results for the same seed. This is untested though, so for now, just assume that it should give the same world, but is not guaranteed.

Be aware that even with the same seed the spawn location is likely to be different, which can result in confusion.

Is there a relation to a position of a digit in a seed that will produce certain results, for example, the first number of the seed being the number of cave entrances nearby?

No, seed 5017 is going to be completely different from 5018.
There are no patterns, larger numbers do not result in larger features, repeating patterns of numbers will not give anything special, prime numbers and perfect numbers have no effect.

Why can I use words instead of numbers?

Letters and symbols on computers are stored in Bytes, presumably minecraft converts these bytes into decimal numbers, for example, the letter m = 01101101 and converted into decimal that is 109.
Capital letters and lower case letters have different values in binary, so if you do decide to use words, make sure you use the correct capitalization.

Here are 10 of the best Minecraft World Seeds w/ Descriptions:
Seed names are in Bold font below.

1. 404
This seed is not for the faint of heart. Entering "404" will spawn you in a seemingly normal world. Close to your spawn will be a large gravel pit. If you remove any of the gravel pieces you will open up a gigantic cave! The cave is filled with tons of enemies, ore and lava. This map even has a game and point system with it to add scoring. Good luck and make sure to bring your weapons and wits!

2. 10110101

Entering the seed "10110101" will place you in one epic map. There are numerous huge mountain arches with large gaps in between. It is an awesome seed for building giant projects on. It may take a bit of time to find this area but I assure you that this map is well worth your time.

3. Gargamel
Entering the seed "gargamel" Will spawn you in between an entire valley of high mountain walls. There is one dark cave leading out of the valley into a sprawling landscape of beautiful Minecraft landscape. With a seemingly endless horizon, this map offers some of he best areas to see your creations come to life.

4. Pokeylucky
The map seed "pokeylucky" is a pretty great seed. Upon entering the world, you will be immersed in a landscape full of floating islands. These islands are awesome for building and look great if you build waterfalls off the sides. It might take a bit of exploring to find them, but this map has a lot to offer.

5. Wave Race 64
This seed "Wave Race 64" Will give you some awesome game play. With tons of water and tall mountains, this map captures the feel of Minecraft but amps it up. There are numerous great building locations and almost all spawns will give you a nice starting location.

6. Atticus
Typing in "Atticus" will give you a snowy world with a unique surprise. If you venture to coordinates -540, -940 you will find the entrance to a deep cave. Upon exploring it you will discover it is an underground beach with a lake and everything! This is a great map for snow structures as well as exploring.

7. To The Moon
The seed "to the moon" will set you on a water filled landscape with a few scattered islands. If you travel around and find a sand bar with a few single block holes on it, then you've found the maps secret. If you find this sandbar, go down the deep holes to find a gigantic pitch-black cave.
There is tons to explore down there, so goodluck!

8. Discord
Entering the seed "discord" will set you up on the largest sand-based map in Minecraft. It almost never ends, with sand in every direction. there are almost no mountains or other blocks than sand. If you are looking for a place to build the Pyramids of Giza or the Sphinx, this is most definitely the map for you.

9. Glacier
Entering the seed "Glacier" Will spawn you in between a whole bunch of mountains. There are a couple lakes around as well as caves. This map is excellent for bulding large projects or connecting mountains with bridges etc. The ultimate area for defence, Glacier offers some unique gameplay.

10. Eagle
Entering "eagle" as your seed will spawn you a sprawling desert. If you travel around, you will find a huge stone mountain that is precariously balanced above a grassy oasis. This map is awesome for creating pyramids and other buildings made from sandstone. The mountain offers a great 360 view of the surrounding landscape.
