I am posting this topic to ask for any advice on fixing the RRoD Xbox 360.

I have just acquired this Xbox 360 console displaying 3 red rings with a secondary code of 0021.

The console has the Xenon Motherboard from a non-HDMI July 2006 model. (see the motherboard ID - X803600-011 on one of my pictures)

The console initially gave the secondary error code 0021 which from [ Register or Signin to view external links. ] shows that the issue is:

"This error is caused by a bridged solder joint under GPU or Southbridge. It can also be power related(the Southbridge isnt getting enough power). Can also be a component that is missing or damaged so look for missing and bridged parts(caps etc) near the Southbridge".

I don't believe the issue is missing parts, I don't see any missing caps etc. (see one of my photos)

I have noticed the console has had the X-clamps removed on the CPU and GPU heatsinks and replaced with machined bolts, steel and nylon washers.

From looking at the GPU, I believe there are cold broken solder joints (see my GPU photos), I thus adjusted the GPU heatsink to apply pressure to the GPU to improve contact with the motherboard.

On doing so, the secondary error code changed from 0021 to 0020.

0020 description ( [ Register or Signin to view external links. ] "This error is caused by a bridged solder joint under CPU, GPU or one of the RAM bricks.
This effect can also be caused by tin whiskers leading to shorts and if the GPU was taken off the mainboard this error will also show up.
It can also be power related(the CPU/GPU or RAM isnt getting enough power). Can also be a component that is missing or damaged so look for missing and bridged parts near the GPU.
If the console was jtagged and the resistors and cables are still connected it will show 0020, the parallel port can stay as long as no PC is connected."

I therefore believe there is no issue with the Southbridge, since 0020 does not mention anything about the Southbridge.

On looking at the CPU (see my CPU photos), I also believe there are broken solder joints.

The ram bricks don't seem to show any broken solder joints.

I tried applying pressure to the CPU via increasing the tension on the CPU heatsink but I still get 0020.

What do I do to go about fixing this issue? I can't reball since I don't have specialist equipment. I am thinking of applying NO CLEAN flux around the edges of the GPU and CPU and applying a heat gun at around 200 deg C for about 4 minutes on each (GPU and CPU) to see if I can reflow the solder. Is this a good idea?

Will this just warp the board, should I apply the heat gun to the underside of the board to stabilise the heat transfer across the board to minimise any warping?

It looks as though the GPU and CPU have lifted from their blue-yellow corner as a result of the broken solder joints.

I have colour coded the GPU, CPU sides which can be seen on one of the photos.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated

Best bet would be to try a reflow if you cannot perform a reball..

I'd put on original x clamps and replace the thermal paste and see if error still presents itself. If so, at last attempt to save the board you can attempt to reflow the cpu n gpu. In most cases you have bridged points underneath one of them. Due to ms using cheap solder back in the xenon days.

However I'd suggest finding someone who is skilled at reballing because that would.be the best long term solution

Send to Appollo. If you want to save the console! other wise not worth fixing. Using a heat gun will just cause more damage then good

Belive it or not Im afraid I dont get involved with fixing rrod 9/10 it is a waste of time to be completely honest.

The only repairs I offer are if you console is already chippped and is suffering Bad Flash, Software Errors and E?? ERRORS or needs a system update or Fast boot time upgrade.

I would highly recommend buying a new console from either myself or a trusted seller from this website.

Here is a link to my shop, please any questions or inquires feel free to get in contact via private message.
