IMPORTANT - READ FIRST

This an edited, updated version of the tutorial on Overclockers forum. I have done this as applications/drivers have updated since and thus appearances. This should make it easier for beginners to follow the steps.

Do not install the drivers listed here before you have read through the tutorial!

This can be a long tedious task. Do not start what you cannot finish. Continue at your own risk.

Before you Overclock make sure you have a large enough power supply. If you are unsure whether yours is big enough feel free to private message me. I am currently busy, but I check my PMs at least 3 times a day; I'll try and get back to you as quick as possible.

Programmes you're going to need:

If you have previous Overclocking utilities or graphics card drivers installed:

Preparing to Overclock your card

    1. Download and install Driver Fusion. Once installed, uninstall ALL of your current graphics card drivers and overclocking utilities - if you have any installed. Reboot into safe mode and run Driver Fusion and Select AMD like [ Register or Signin to view external links. ] and the click Delete. This will remove all drivers and their components.

    2. Once removed, install the new drivers and MSI Afterburner you downloaded.

    3. Now you've downloaded them, you'll be prompted for a reboot. When your computer has finished rebooting you're going to want to copy these settings for MSI afterburner: [ Register or Signin to view external links. ]

    4. Once you have copied those settings, you're going to want to create a fan profile (optional, but recommended if you have a reference design card or a bad cooler). I have a Sapphire 7850 but I still wanted to create a fan profile to ensure temperatures don't get in the way of overclocking. Under full load without a fan profile I reach temperatures of 67 degrees C and 56 with an aggressive fan profile. Here is mine: [ Register or Signin to view external links. ] It does get noisy, but when you're overclocking it doesn't matter - you want the lowest temperatures possible so that you can get the best overclock. Once overclocked, you can alter it depending on what your noise threshold is.

    5. If you haven't been prompted to restart already, do so now. You should now be ready to overclock your card!

Increasing the Core clock and Voltage

This part of the task can be long and tedious. It requires patience and time. It isn't hard if you have followed these steps carefully. You'll now need to install Unigine Valley.

    1. Up the power consumption to +20 to ensure that the card doesn't throttle when overclocking.

    2. Start by increasing the core clock by 25 MHz after each successful benchmark of Unigine Valley with these settings: [ Register or Signin to view external links. ] by pressing F9 once the simulation has begun. If you successfully complete the benchmark you can then increase the core clock by another 25Mhz. Every time you increase it, remember what you increased it to. The easiest way to increase the clock by 25 MHz is to click the number it is currently on, enter the new value and press enter like this: [ Register or Signin to view external links. ] -> [ Register or Signin to view external links. ]

    3. At some point you will reach a stage where your overclock tops out. You suddenly start getting crashes, error messages, black screens, driver stopped responding messages. At this point you have two options. Back out and settle for what you've got or carry on but start adding voltage. If you cannot back out, do a reboot of the system. Don't worry, if this is your first time, you haven't broken your graphics card. This is why I recommended that you take note of the core clock count you just overclocked to, so that you don't have to begin the process again.

    4. Now, what I did, and what I recommend you do, is to look up the safe over voltage limit on google for you card model (i.e. 7850, 7950 etc). Increase it to that straight away, as all cards should be able to reach that limit no problem.

    5. Once you've set the voltage you can begin increasing the core clock by 25 Mhz after every successful benchmark. Again, you will get to a point where it crashes, however this time this is the cards limit. I hit mine quite early - I've seen cards of the same model as mine hit 1350s; a whole 150MHz more than me.

Increasing the Memory Clock

    1. Apply the same steps you took when overclocking the Core Clock - increasing the memory clock by 25 MHz after every successful benchmark.

    2. You will get to a point where you hit a screen that will look similar to this: [ Register or Signin to view external links. ] That means your memory has reached its maximum stable speed and exceeded it. Drop back down 25 MHz to the level you were able to complete a benchmark successfully.

    3. You, should, have now successfully overclocked your card to it's limit - the official way! Well Done 098))

Not Working? 4455()

If you haven't been successful and are running into problems such as: When you decrease the value you still get crashes etc, even when running at stock levels OR The computer crashed and won't turn on then feel free to private message me. I will try to aid you as best as we can. Remember, Google will often be more help than a single person.

Feel that there's something missing? PM me and if I think it should be added I will add it, and give you credit below.

I didn't actually gain much on my 7850OC edition, not enough to warrant actually leaving it overclocked anyway. power @ 35%, core clock wont allow me to go over 1050MHz, and memory clock 1350MHz.

Epic tut bud, can't believe i missed it all this time.

I wish there was one to overclock my Nvida, I need that one.

I have used this before and can confirm that it works just fine. Thanks for the tutorial
