Rise of the Tomb Raider came out a couple of weeks ago to a very positive critical reception. It did however release on the same day as Fallout 4, and while there’s no official sales data for it yet, some reports indicated it didn’t do very well at retail.
Speaking to fans on the unofficial Tombraiderforums, game director Brian Horton said the suggestion that sales numbers reflect poorly on the development team is not true.
“I didn’t mean to go off topic or patronise, but there was suggestion in the thread that the reported sales numbers reflect poorly on the dev team. Square [Enix]/Microsoft are happy with Crystal [Dynamics] and Eidos Montreal and the game itself. As to the topic of sales, I’m unqualified to discuss it so I won’t have anything else to say on this thread,” he said.
Unable to comment on sales numbers specifically, Horton reiterated that both publishers are “very happy” with the game and the development team, and that they’re all looking forward to the The Game Awards ceremony, where the game is nominated for an award.
“The dev team is not responsible for sales and therefore we look to reviews and releasing on time to gauge our performance. We accomplished these goals. The press considers Rise of the Tomb Raider a high quality game based on the scores,” he added.
The Game Awards show takes place this Thursday, December 3. Rise of the Tomb Raider comes out on PC early in 2016, with a PS4 release later in the year.
