Will PS4 ever be backward compatible with PS3 games? “No,”says Yoshida

4.5
Sony has reiterated it has no intention of bringing backward compatibility to PlayStation 4.

Head of PlayStation Europe, Jim Ryan, said as much back in June, as did Sony Worldwide boss Shuhei Yoshida.

The earliest PS3 model was backward compatible with PS2, but wasn’t “greatly used,” according to Sony.

“PS3 is such a unique architecture, and some games made use of SPUs very well,” Yoshida said at the time. “It’s going to be super challenging to do so. I never say never, but we have no plans.”

At Paris Games Week, Yoshida once again said Sony didn’t have plans to include backward compatibility, by stating “no” when asked.

So, there we have it then.

It seems to be that playstation are being very boring when it comes to developments on their consoles. Thats why people pick xbox over playstation because Microsoft are open to new ideas and try and implement things that their customers want.

I expected this on PS4. PlayStation I guess, needs more money. It'd be pretty good if they added this feature though :/

Swift If I bought my PS4 to play PS3 games they would not have bought a PS4 in the beginning. I would have saved 200 dollars and bought a PS3.

I've used the feature on the Xbox One and I will say that its not all that its lived up to be, I mean playing Mass Effect is fun in all but it does not age well.

agreed, people seem to forget that backwards compatibility just shows how well and how bad some games age. Don't get me wrong, the feature is cool but not when the current gen console is being optimized to just play games from the last era. There will never be full backwards compatibility on either console and I'd just prefer it if both companies focused on their current consoles.

Why is there still articles about this. They have already confirmed this way back after E3.

JRMH Thank god I bought an Xbox One. Never regretted it. Some people are okay with playing the half-done games on next-gen, whilst others (such as myself) enjoy the classics alongside some decent games.

I will say that PS2-compatibility is pretty cool, although it isn't super impressive.

Most of these "classics" most likely will not be on the xbox one through backwards compatibility. You can play borderlands and halo all you want though dont get me wrong. I think its just time to move on, if these "classics" are so good, they will most likely be remastered. Thats none of my business though.

-BRZ- Personally, I'm glad Sony says "No" to Backwards Compatibility. I'd rather PlayStation implement new features and focus on more current gen things. I just feel that harping on Backwards Compatibility is a backwards move. I feel that we need to let go of last-gen console games ,and devote complete time to new features and developing on just current-gen games. Just my opinion.

I'm going to disagree. Being able to play 360 games on xbox one was an extremely hard thing for xbox to do if it was so hard wouldn't that mean a move forward and not backward? It's a feature for Xbox One so I consider that a move forward in my book.

I agree with this. It is a move forward. This isn't something that Microsoft is fully focused on either. It was just pet project that worked. Microsoft is able to add nextgen features/improve the console, while having Backwards compatibility.
