Windows 10 won’t run PC games with ageing DRM

4.6
Upgrading to Windows 10 may have some unfortunate consequences.

Windows 10 won’t support games utilising DRM like SafeDisc and some versions of Securom, apparently.

The information comes from a Microsoft’s Boris Schneider-Johne, speaking in a Rocket Beans video interview form gamescom, as translated by Rock, Paper, Shotgun.

“Everything that ran in Windows 7 should also run in Windows 10. There are just two silly exceptions: antivirus software and stuff that’s deeply embedded into the system,” Schneider-Johne said.

“And then there are old games on CD-Rom that have DRM. This DRM stuff is also deeply embedded in your system, and that’s where Windows 10 says ‘sorry, we cannot allow that, because that would be a possible loophole for computer viruses.’

“That’s why there are a couple of games from 2003-2008 with Securom, etc. that simply don’t run without a no-CD patch or some such. We can just not support that if it’s a possible danger for our users. There are a couple of patches from developers already, and there is stuff like GOG where you’ll find versions of those games that work.”

Further investigation by PCgamesHardware.de, again translated by RPS, suggests SafeDisk, for one, won’t be doing anything about the problem and has left it up to Microsoft to fix – and that seems unlikely given that SafeDisk itself is notoriously insecure.

aMio sad how there seems to be no show of positive things about windows 10

sounds like you dont know what you are talking about
Windows 10: lowest ram usage of any recent OS hardly using 1gb ram

Thats not true, many linux distos use less than 500mbs of ram.

Yeah seriously some linux distros are so light weight its amazing. I recently switch to Arch, and it uses less than 500mb of my 16GB when im just browsing the internet.

except im not talking about linux
im talking about windows OS which was implied

Yes linux is butter jajajaja no.... Windows 10 is actually really great win it comes to size and usage not sure the exact numbers but its sure is smaller than 7/8.

the games are actually pretty recent, not as I suspected... the games that will be unsupported include: Spore(obviously didn't work, lol), Bioshock, and Mass Effect. There are many more, I hope to see a list put out.

Good thing all of my games are on Steam.

I bet it is a small percentage of the userbase that actually uses old game disks. And if it can be used to stop a loop hole for viruses then I am all for not having the old game disks. I bet you can still get a digital copy of the old game cheap from steam or GOG anyway.
