Phil Spencer Says Catching PS4 Sales Isn’t His Priority

4.7
Since the Xbox One and the PS4 launched, Sony has held the upper hand when it comes to sales of units in a very big way. This year, the Xbox One has made some serious inroads when it comes to catching Sony and the Playstation 4 and making this a real contest. The company has come up with ideas like backwards compatibility that Sony hasn’t even offered yet. It was also the first to launch a console with a larger hard drive in order to make it easier for players with large downloadable games libraries.

Despite all of this Phil Spencer says his primary goal isn’t to “catch” Sony. Instead the Xbox One chief’s primary mission is just to make sure his console has a strong standing and is well received. He believes the rest will take care of itself. Talking to the Eurogamer, he laid out how he sees where his product stands now. “All I can do is focus on Xbox, and I love that. I love our fans and the partners we have. We’re growing Xbox year on year, we’re bigger than we were this time in the 360 generation, so generation over generation we’re in a better spot, year over year we’re in a better spot.”

Spencer went onto claim that he really doesn’t even think about how many units Sony has sold. While that might seem an awful lot like someone would say no matter who they were and where they were in the market share, it’s still a healthy approach. You don’t want execs always being reactive with their product to what their competitors are doing. Instead, they should be looking to innovate on their own. Phil Spencer seems to share that belief publicly.

Sales shouldn't be a priority anyway. Offering the best service they can however, should be.

-it- Sony and Xbox been going at it for years, I believe Xbox wins all the time because their servers, PS4 don't got good servers, And by now there should not be a competition.

I can guarantee Xbox will surpass Playstation. I've said from the start this will happen.

People don't remember this is what happened with the Ps3 and 360. Ps3 took the lead for quite a while then after a year or 2ish, 360 was the dominant console up to the new ones coming out.

I'll say about June next year when games are out, Xbox will be the better sales unit. The only thing is, all these CoD fanboys will sell Ones to get Ps4s just for the comp scene when 97% of players aren't even comp players. They're just there to see OpTic.

Unlikely there was an article up awhile ago that said even in the next few years PS4 will still have a massive lead. I mean X1 is at 13M and PS4 is almost at 25M. MS would have to do something pretty outstanding to sell 12M more consoles.

-PurpleHaze Well if sales isn't his priority, I hope that improving the console to make it the best console possible is. I have been pretty impressed so far

Blah....what else is he going to say. But if sales did surpass Sony he would soon change his tune and they would all be patting each other on the back saying we did it.

Just all smoke and mirrors and total BS.

It's said they have to fight for sales by grubbing features from people playing tons. They make you spend $400-500 then months later when you are fed up with having no storage release larger HDD's and or a whole new model with more space. It's sad that people still buy into this because the technology has been here for years. There are drives of 8TB and even solid state and this year PCIE solid state is getting better. On top of that the "next gen" of gaming has been hardly that when it cannot even do 1080p, sometimes they use dynamic 1080p but its really 900p. The XBOX360 and PS3 were honestly better than these things. It has become all about the money instead of providing a good service.

"Next-gen" consoles play 900/1080p at 30fps. 10/10 would buy again.

I ain't trying to get anything started, but you gotta understand. Not everyone, but some people don't buy a gaming console, just based on how good their servers are. There are some people, who could care less about online play. I ain't saying everyone is like this, because I know that isn't true. Online play, and the involvement of servers, isn't why some people buy a gaming console, people buy it, because maybe it's the console their friend, or friends is getting. Some buy it, just to play games online, or offline. Some buy it, for things like Netflix, Hulu, etc.

But you are saying its not a competition, because of Sonys so called, not so good servers, while Microsoft on the other hand has better servers. But it is a competition, as you see, people don't just pay for a console, just for the idea of better or worse servers. I mean, I will agree with you, that Sony doesn't have very good servers, while Microsoft on the other hand, has some fairly nice servers, compared to its main competitor, Sony. But I feel as if, the way you are implying things, is that people buy consoles, just because of servers. If this was true, who would have all the sales? Microsoft would have more sales than Sony. Which who knows, in the coming years, Microsoft could end up beating Sony with the most sales. But, if what you are saying, was the main factor, in deciding what system to buy, Microsoft would already be winning in terms of sales.
