Activision discusses why Black Ops 3 will release on a Friday

4.6
For the first time ever, a Call of Duty title will be releasing worldwide on a Friday. As part of the reveal in April, Activision confirmed that Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 will be available Friday, November 6th for Xbox One, PS4, and PC. In the press release, Activision promoted this release day as “See you on November 6, the new Black Friday.”

In an interview with Forbes, Activision’s Senior Vice President, Rob Kostich, stated that the decision was based around more players being able to get the game on Friday and play it through the weekend.

“We thought it would be really fun for the fans to kick-off Black Ops 3 on a weekend. The Black Ops series is the most played in Call of Duty history with nearly 100 million players to date. With Black Ops 3, the team at Treyarch is really taking things to a new level. There’s so much in this game across every mode of play. Campaign has been reimagined and can now be played cooperatively with your friends. Zombies, of course, are back. And multiplayer is bringing a ton of depth and new ideas to the experience. So giving fans as much time as possible out of the gate to experience all the game has to offer just made a lot of sense.”

Tuesday has been the iconic release day for entertainment titles for years in the United States; it’s the one day that works with all retail partners across the country. Activision would not say with certaintiy whether changing release to a Friday will continue into future Call of Duty titles.

“As a company, we have released on different dates in the past. It really depends on the game and what works best for it. Again, for Black Ops 3, a Friday release to kick-off a weekend celebration was just something we thought our fans would really enjoy.”

This is great news. I would always have a test the next day whenever the new COD was released.

Finally it comes out just before the weekend, I hate having to play it throughout the week when I have other things in the way like School

Finally straying away from the Tuesday releases to try and get more people online.

Tuesday releases were always a stupid idea. I'd basically have to wait until the following weekend to play and really get into the game and that always bothered me.

Maybe this will change things up and get us some better release dates.

Not a big thing tbh, most of the people who play COD just hve school in the week and are not old enough to be doing exams or anything important lol

Miss I never understood why a Call of Duty would always come out on a Tuesday. That just didn't seem very smart for a business whatsoever. I'm sure Treyarch will see huge gains for doing this.

It has to do with a pun back in the day when SEGA was a big console.
They wanted to release Sonic 2 on a Tuesday to make it "Sonic 2sday".
They have kinda released games on a Tuesday since then.

Also, sales figures are released on Mondays for DVD/Game sales
They don't do mail on Sunday, so that would make release day shipping impossible on Monday.
