Minecraft name changing option confirmed for February

4.4
Developer Mojang will release an update for Minecraft on February 4 that will allow players to change their in-game names.

A name changing option has been long requested by the Minecraft community, and was previously promised for release in early 2015 by Mojang.

In an official Q&A detailing the change, the developer confirmed that player names will still remain unique. When a player changes their name their old username will become available for others to take 37 days later.

Old unpaid usernames will be freed up once the name change feature is released.

Changing your name will be free. "The only thing you need is a Mojang account. If you currently sign in to Minecraft with an email address, you're all good," says the developer. "Once the feature is made available you'll see a "change" link next to your Minecraft name."

I think this could be handy for some players, although I don't think its a huge need.
