A PSP 2 may be Sony’s big ace in the hole for next month’s E3, it’s being rumored.

MCV has been informed by “a senior industry source” of two key publishers significantly increasing their marketing spend for Q4 2010 while another has allegedly been forced to wait until Sony makes a certain announcement before it can reveal its future PSP plans.

The speculative conclusion: a PSP 2 is to be announced shortly.

With a new 3D-enabled DS successor coming from Nintendo, releasing a new PSP appears crucial should Sony wish to stay competitive in the handheld business, especially as PSPgo didn’t quite do the trick. But, clearly, this is nothing more than a rumor for now.
