New Alienware Steam Machines will be released annually

4.4
Alienware will release a new Steam Machine on an annual basis, a company exec has revealed.

"Lifecycle wise, consoles update every five, six, seven years, we will be updating our Steam Machines every year," Alienware's GM Frank Azor told TrustedReviews.

He went on to explain that annual updates will be necessary due to its Steam Machine's complete lack of upgradeability.

"There will be no customisation options, you can't really update it," he said of the Alienware Steam Machine, which was revealed alongside 12 others at a recent Steam Machine event.

"The platform will continue to evolve as the games become more resource intensive," added Azor.

Alienware typically offers a number of out-the-box options for its gaming PCs, and its slimline Steam Machine will be no different.

"There will be some configuration options when you purchase it, maybe you can get a faster CPU, maybe some more memory something like that," said Azor.

He went on to suggest that those interested in making internal upgrades themselves would be better off with a regular PC, onto which you can install SteamOS for free for Steam Machine functionality.

"If you actually want to customise your Alienware Steam Machine, maybe change your graphics card out or put in a new CPU, you would be better off with the standard Alienware X51," he said.

Alienware's first Steam Machine is expected to launch in September.

daRealRush I love the way Alienware computers look, but there price is so high. I do understand that they are trying to make money, but I would much rather build a PC.

People just buy it cause how it looks.

Building a PC is much more cost efficient so that's really the way to go if you ask me

I completely agree, you can custom build a PC better then an Alienware computer for far less money.

I reckon people purchase Alienwares mainly because they look nice and don't really care about the specs.

Kex is right. At the end of the day, people are paying for a name.

Its really just a pc to brag about, the specs are good but for the price not worth it.

ZE_BLUEZ I think that the whole point of a steam machine is pointless, do to the fact that its almost like a whole new company similar to AlienWare. Overpriced and extremely Bad, its bad because 3-4 Years from now the parts inside are done out of date. Honesty if you want to game on pc build one or go Console...

Buddy its only Alienwares version of the steam box that cant be upgraded.. The other 13 can be ungraded as much as you want. Not just one company is making a steam box.. 14 company are making there own versions.
