Sledgehammer staffing up for 'next-gen Call of Duty game'

Studio seeking to fill positions across multiple disciplines for unannounced title

Sledgehammer Games is actively recruiting in a bid to strengthen the development team working on a next-gen Call of Duty game.

Earlier this week, parent company Activision posted more than ten Sledgehammer job adverts across a range of disciplines including art, design, animation and engineering. Multiple job ads note that the studio is "working on a next-gen Call of Duty game".

Formed in 2009, California-based Sledgehammer originally worked on an unfinished third person Call of Duty game before being drafted in to help Infinity Ward complete Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.

While the nature of its new game remains a mystery, Sledgehammer general manager Glen Schofield told us in October 2011 that he thought the studio would work alone following its MW3 collaboration with Infinity Ward, the studio primarily responsible for 2013's Call of Duty: Ghosts.

"This game has allowed both Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer Games to hire, and we hired really strong teams, both of us," he said. "We needed to come together on this one, but since then we've both grown, we're both over 100 people now.

"Initially we weren't fully functional because we had to learn a new engine," Schofield added. "Now we have, I think the best thing that could happen for Activision would be for us to both go off and make our own game. Whether that's a Call of Duty game or not is up in the air. I plan to continue working on Call of Duty."

Just stop already. The game went bad after Call of Duty 4.

Australians CoD: Ghosts could have been a whole lot better, the campaign was alright, but I couldn't stand multiplayer or Extinction. I do hope they improve the next game tho.
I haven't even finished the campaign yet lol, hopefully I will soon.

It's short but sweet, pretty good tho.

Call of Duty: Ghosts gets a lot of hate even thought they did put a lot of new stuff on it.

Extinction, Safeguard, Squads, Wargames, Cranked, Blitz, Search & Rescue, Hunted.

I've played Call of Duty since the very first one, Call of Duty 3 being the abomination of these games, but I can only say that even though I enjoy the game. One thing that prevents me from playing the multiplayer often is the killstreaks.

To me Call of Duty has had that addicting touch when you were doing pretty good you would go ahead and get rewarded. I liked the fact that they brought back the Strike Packages because it gives newcomers a chance to enjoy the game when there is so many veterans that play the game, but in the end the killstreaks were so underwhelming, I honestly hated it. Guard Dog - Useless Rocket - Maniac. One of the reasons why I enjoyed Modern Warfare 1 and 2 the most was the chaos atmosphere. Having a multiple Harriers, Chopper Gunners and a AC-130 plunging the match into chaos was a fun experience. Which is I started playing Battlefield 4 as well, ABSOLUTELY LOVE the chaos.

This game had decent pointstreaks which made the game very stale, I appreciated the fact they brought back some good perks like Marathon which helps with the bigger maps and make it a fast paced game, but it could've been a much better experience.

Final thing to say, this game needs a new engine already.

They've taken note of their mistakes so I'm sure it will be way better

Mold The cod series needs to die. I've finally moved on to BF4 and have never been happier!

Ignorance like this needs to die. Not everyone has the same beliefs as you, and you have to respect that. Just because you feel CoD is a bad series doesn't mean others do as well. Call of Duty is a top seller every year surpassing BF's sales by a lot. I do agree that CoD has lost it's touch from CoD4 and WaW but it's still a pretty fun game.

Qwikscoper Black Ops 1 was the last good Call of Duty and Black Ops 2 was also a half decent game. The problem is that IW simply does not care. They have been using the same engine since Call of Duty 2 with tweaks and some modifications. MW3 was disgusting in the fact that it was exactly the same as MW2 with a few minor tweaks and new maps. Ghosts discredited them altogether and further proved by the amount of people that play the game compared to previous CoD's that the community is done with their ****. Personally I played Ghosts for a few days just to see if it was any better, but turned out to be the worst CoD I've ever played by far. Call of Duty absolutely needs a next gen engine, like Frostbite 3, in order to comeback and finally put something new on the market. It would be amazing if they would go back to the WWII days on a new engine that way the old zombie characters could come back and I just couldn't imagine zombies on a Frostbite 3 or Crytek type engine! The point is if Call of Duty does not upgrade their engine and make some major changes, like possibly adding co-op campaign/ map making customization/ completely new storyline, the series will continue to fade and the community will get smaller until the series ends.

completly agree with you, they have the mindset that they have their cod consumers in their hands so any games they automatically assume they'll purchase which is true -__- so there isn't much effort put into these games...Im telling you 2 years is alot to develop a game especially a copy and past series such as Cod. MW3 was S*** fest recycled guns, kill streaks was worse than MW2, and maps was ughh horrible..ghost I was right horrible game I'd say it's worse than CoD 3. The only innovators are treyarch as they always improve the game or includes some never before seen things that IW never uses, like what you guys may say umm wheres theater mode in mw3 & ghost? my point exactly but unfortunately treyarch is getting lazy themselves as you seen with bops 2. The last great cod game was bops 1 thats it..afterwords it's plunged
