Xbox One shouldn’t be last Microsoft console, says Spencer

4.6
Xbox One isn’t necessarily Microsoft’s last home console, according to Phil Spencer. He reckons home computation is still important for the time being.

It follows Spencer’s comments that mid-tier and indie games are harder to sell in the mass market, hence the need for a program like ID@Xbox.

Responding to a fan on Twitter, Spencer posted the following:

@XboxP3 Tough question, but do you think Xbox One is the last console as "we know it"? You know, running on local hardware.

The need for physical components in the home – processors and the like – is still there, and it’s clear that Microsoft’s cloud compute is only shouldering a share of game processing for the time being.

As we saw with Sony’s PlayStation Now reveal last week, cloud computing is slowly becoming a trend in the industry. How long will it be before we ditch the boxes entirely? That’s another conversation.

I dont think the xbox one will be Microsofts last console, i think they will wait to see how successful one is in 2 or 3 years, if its done a good job they'll probably continue making consoles. If it blows they might stop making consoles.

Aah I doubt the Xbox One will be Microsoft last tconsole

I think it really depends on who the new CEO of Microsoft is, didnt one of the potential candidates say that if he gets in he would shutter the whole XBOX Division?

K16 I'm expectations that MS may have a secret way to boost performance through the cloud.

If so I will get one :) I was gonna but they are way over priced right now

They do have a way but it's no secret. They have mentioned that with the power of the cloud they make game worlds come alive and be organic even when you are off the game and that there is virtually unlimited processing power with the cloud technology MS has.

There will always have to be SOME type of hardware.

I dont think we will see gaming leave our TV screen any time soon, and whether the processor is in our house or not, something will be.

Also, things are not changing as rapidly as some think, or want. Microsoft wanted to start the digital-only delivery of games too early, and you saw how that went.
