Titanfall has been tough to market due to lack of single-player

4.5
Titanfall developer Respawn Entertainment, has had a rough time of accurately marketing the shooter, given its lack of single-player mode. That’s the claim of producer Drew McCoy, who recently shed some new light on the matter.

It follows uproar around Titanfall’s 12 player cap, something we felt was nothing to worry about.

Now, in a post on NeoGAF, McCoy wrote, “Its actually been really tough trying to accurately market Titanfall. If you look at what we’ve done, its a lot different than what most FPS games do. Without a bunch of highly scripted SP moments to recam from different angles, the usual ‘movie like’ trailer is just about right out.

“Instead, we’ve decided to show unedited gameplay segments that last 3-5 minutes (so far – more footage coming, of course!) to show the “flow” of the game. Starting as a Pilot, taking on AI and other player Pilots, wall running around a Titan, earning your Titan, climbing in, battling other Titans while stomping on humans, ejecting, etc. There’s a huge amount of gameplay mechanics available at any one time, and encompassing them in a few minutes is actually quite hard to do.

“Its also why we took an extremely early pre-alpha build of the game to events like Gamescom, PAX, etc. to let normal dudes hands-on time with the game. There’s no amount of polished marketing that can replace playing the actual game.”

On the whole player count thing, McCoy replied to one forum member, “What about high player counts makes that more fun, though? I honestly want to know, because this kind of stuff is super important and we obsess over it every day.”

This game looks awesome, SP or not..

If you ask me, people now seem to only buy games to play the multi-player, so they just made what MOST people want, not all!

I know there are few people who dont have online and can only play sp. But a lot of people who are complaining about there not being sp usually run through the campaign once & never play it again. I believe Titanfall will be extremely successful even w/o sp. There are only few games that i enjoy playing sp over & over again (bioshock)

K16 I think single player may be fun, but MP will always be the selling point.

Honestly the only thing I havent gotten totally clear is Titanfalls lore. Which I feel like they couldve structured up with a SP campaign, but honestly the commercial style videos theyve put out explaining the different Titan bots have already given a little bit of framework lore.

I think theyve done a good job with the two gameplay trailers Ive got a sense of how the game actually plays and feels. Makes me more excited for it. On the other hand my interest in Destiny has waned a little as a result of the slow tease up to launch. Hoping for great things for both titles.

Makes sense, most SP content is marketed, but this is only MP. Would be cool to have a SP.

I usually buy games for MP anyways.

Potion If anything i think it would be easier to market having to only focus on multipalyer.

Considering Respawn is responsible for the world's most successful gaming franchise, and have probably spent tens of thousands on market research, I'm gonna take their word over yours.
