UK PS4 sales narrowly beat Xbox 360 in 2013

While 3DS was the best-selling game system of the year

PS4 was the UK's top-selling home game console of 2013.

As previously revealed by retail monitor Chart-Track, UK PS4 sales surpassed 530,000 units in 30 days. In doing so, sales of Sony's new console topped annual Xbox 360 sales by just a couple of thousand units, MCV reports.

Boosted by a strong software release schedule, 3DS was the UK's best-selling game system of 2013, while Microsoft managed to shift 364,000 Xbox Ones in the UK during the console's first five weeks of availability.

PlayStation UK boss Fergal Gara said: "We are delighted with the very strong sales of PS4 to date. Since we unveiled the console, gamers have shown huge interest in the PS4. Our focus now is rebuilding stock levels so those have not been able to get a PS4 can finally experience the next-gen. I'd like to thank the gamers, our retail and publishing partners who played a big part in making this success possible."

Worldwide PS4 sales topped 4.2 million units as of December 28, Sony claimed on Tuesday.

Microsoft said on Monday that Xbox One sales hit three million globally by the end of 2013.

Not a giant headliner. New Consoles from MS and Sony are fairly rare, normally taking 5+ years for even new info. Good on Sony though selling so many in the UK. I heard the Xbox One didn't fare as well over there though.

Cokes Wow, considering it's next gen I would have thought the PS4 would have blew away the 360.


It's hard to blow away a system that was out for the full year when the PS4 was out for less than 2 months in 2013...


but on the other hand, who buys a brand new gaming system knowing that the next gen will be coming out? if you really wanted the system, wouldnt you just buy it used? much much cheaper.

That is because there are lots of Pokemon nerds every where I swear there are people every where in my school with a 3ds and Pokemon x and y


Well Pokemon has always been a very popular franchise and an excellent exclusive to Nintendo consoles. I am not surprised that it bumped up 3DS sales significantly.

The 3DS deserved that. Many good games, and several great ones (in my opinion). Whether it would have done so well without the all-conquering might of POKMON is uncertain, but I'd say that it deserved to regardless.

That'll change this year though considering the One and PS4 haven't been out long so a lot more sales are expected.
