Sony announces PlayStation 4 sales reached 4.2 million by end of 2013

4.7
Sony announced it's sold 4.2 million PlayStation 4 consoles worldwide as of December 28, 2013. Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Andrew House revealed the figure, which is estimated by SCEI, at his company's keynote at the CES trade show. The PS4 data was once again stipulated as "sell-through," meaning it represents units sold to consumers.

It's a dramatic doubling of the figure from December 1, 2013, meaning the company sold another 2.1 million units across the next 27 days of the month. In addition, the company estimates PS4 software sales through retail and digital channels are up to 9.7 million worldwide, while PS Plus subscriptions increased by more than 90 percent between the PS4 launch in North America and the end of the year - it's worth noting the PS4 comes with at least a 30-day Plus subscription in some regions, including the US and Canada.

Just ahead of the PS4's launch in North America, SCEA President and CEO Jack Tretton projected 3 million worldwide sales by the end of the year. We now know the console beat that figure by some way, and the company's next aim of 5 million sales by the end of March looks a cert, given the PS4 is still to launch in Japan next month - the system is currently available in 53 markets worldwide.

The news comes the day after Microsoft announced Xbox One sales passed the 3 million mark by the close of 2013 across 13 markets worldwide.

United501 For anyone that is saying "See, PS4 clearly outsold the Xbox One and is the winner", take this into consideration.

If the XB1 was the same price as the PS4, and if Microsoft never did the 24 hour check in and all the "Only Digital" things that gave the XB1 a bad name when all the reveals started, do you still think the PS4 would have outsold?

If from the beginning they only difference between the consoles was the name and the games that would be on each platform, do you seriously think PS4 would have outsold it?

Probably not.

Yes, they would be the same price but the PS4 is still more powerful. Besides you thats all theoretical, it doesnt matter, Microsoft messed up.

LuckyOtter PS4 was released in 32 countries, a week before the Xbox One, and is hundred dollars cheaper... Xbox One was released in 13 countries and Japan is not one of those. Neither company though has supplied the demand and constantly out of stock. PS4 should still be in the lead but you never know.

Thats where you're wrong. The PS4 only Released in NA/CA that week MS released their in 13 countries and still only sold 1million.
The PS4 didn't hit EU until a week after the xbox one release and sony has yet to release in Japan. So if sony could sell 1million in 2 countries when microsoft could only sell 1million in 13 we clearly know who the winner is.

Yep, the PS4 originally launched only in North America (3 countries) vs the XB1 13 and both sold a million in the first day. It took the XB1 10 more countries to match the PS4, and historically NA is on of the Playstation's weakest zones. The PS4 is simply more popular thats not a new fact.

Lia They'll definetly reach 5 million sales by the end of March.

I could see them achieving that goal pretty easily if not passing it. Things have been looking pretty good for Sony as of late

The only reason its higher is because its cheaper in the end xbox one will win for the games i play i could care less about being apart of the most sold ,but i do want to be apart of a company that listens to the community

daRealRush Over a million more than the Xbox One, that is insane!!

Only sold more because it was released before xbone and is available in way more countries. That's the only reason. Really isn't that impressive if you compare using those facts.

Damn that must be why i see xbox ones sitting in every store i walk into, but ps4 is still nowhere to be found lmao. Get over it, you made the wrong investment
